Off the top of my head I'd say that just about 3 out of any 4 artists you can name peaked with their first album, especially if you throw in the "commercial" qualifier.

And Van Halen wouldn't be a correct answer in my opinion.

Nirvana (remember that it's commercial album- so we're looking at Nevermind, not Bleach)
Weezer
Dave Matthews Band
Sublime
Guns n Roses
Jimi Hendrix
Incubus

Dave Matthews Band isn't even close to a correct answer. Both Crash and Under the Table and Dreaming have the majority of DMB's best stuff.

[/ QUOTE ]

Wasn't Under the Table their first commercial album? If yes, then they qualify.

[/ QUOTE ]

If your definition of peaked is limited to your personal preference, then I guess I guess so. But if your definition requires some form of peak in terms of music and lyrics, then you are way off.

[/ QUOTE ]

Let's not waste a lot of time on DMB -- severly overrated, imo. But I'd still take Under the Table over any of the rest.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yea, with this opinion, we won't get far in a discussion on quality music.

[/ QUOTE ]

DMB is a niche product. And the correct answer was Before These Crowded Streets.

I listened to their new album today, so I'll go ahead and say The Mars Volta.

While I've found both of their subsequent albums enjoyable, they don't come close to "Deloused in the Comatorium."

Weezer definitely not. Pinkerton is too good, even if you don't think it's their best, to say they peaked w/ the Blue Album. Everything since has been depressing.

If hip-hop counts though: Mos Def and Talib Kweli both peaked with Blackstar (and also their individual debuts). Actually, I think the case can be made that most hip-hop artists have peaked w/ their first albums. People might not agree but: Jay-Z, Biggie (a bit unfair), Eminem, Nas, Wu-Tang all have cases to be made that their first was their best.

I don't think this is close enough to a unanimous pick to say that he "peaked" then.

Pearl Jam - Versus was pretty good but not as good as Ten - they have have yet to put out an album since that can even compare to the 1st one.

word, that's basically what i meant, they're all excellent albums. it's like saying Dylan "peaked" at Highway 61 Revisited.

No Code is a very, very good album. Of course, it doesn't "sound like Pearl Jam" so no people don't like it, but the songs are terrific. It's good enough that the idea of them "peaking" early isn't as obvious as it seems, although I can't really argue that Ten isn't their best, either.

(And you know what, I like Vitalogy. I don't care what anyone says.)
