I particular like this quote...
"Meanwhile, senators all over the country are being bombarded by phone calls from the poker players alliance and other internet gambling supporters begging them to stop the attachment Frist is proposing. Senator Clinton's office received more than 50 calls in one hour oppsosing any action against internet gambling. Senator Richard Durbin, at the Illinois office experienced a higher than normal call volume, and people were struggling to get through. Senator John Cornyn's office in Texas received between 100-200 calls from people expressing their views. In Virginia, Senator Allen received over 26 calls from opposers of the gambling bill. Senators are elected to support the majority, but it appears that Senator Bill Frist is only looking out for his conservative minority. [ QUOTE ]
Hi folks. Just to let you know; it's been illegal to settle debts with credit cards for some time now. There was a case in 2000, I think, where a woman drove up a 10k credit card bill playing online and then refused to pay the bill stating that by letting her fund her gambling, the CC company was breaking the law. The CC company sued, and the case was ruled in her favor. Ever since then CC companies have tried not to let people fund any type of online "gambling" because they could get stuck with the bill. Sometimes it slips through the cracks, but the average person does not know that they can just stick them with the bill. It's supposed to work the same way in a brick and mortar casino too, but there you dont use your card to get an advance to keep playing; you use your card to purchase chips with which to keep playing. I dont know, laws in this country can get kinda goofy. Anyway, as far as most people on this site are concerned, this bill should be of little to no consequence- NETELLER for the win folks. [/ QUOTE ] Your entire post is incorrect. The case you are thinking about involved a woman named Cynthia Haines. She lost about $115,000 playing casino games online and sued the credit card company. The suit was SETTLED BEFORE it went to court. The court made no rulings on the matter. The next big case was known as In re: Mastercard. It was brought down in the 5th Circuit against Mastercard, Visa, and Travelers. It involved credit card debt for online casino games. The 5th Circuit ruled that the Wire Act did NOT apply to casino but was limited to sports, therefore the suit was dismissed. As far as your Neteller comment, the proposed Leach bill aims to cut off Neteller. Whether or not it will be successful nobody knows. |

[ QUOTE ] But I am smart enough to defer to Nate, Mr. K, and Berge for their opinion. This is just mine. [/ QUOTE ] Please keep in mind when reading anything I write in this forum that I'm a layman, not an insider like Mr. K and Berge. I'm just trying to address this problem like I would a poker hand, by making the best use of limited information that I can. [/ QUOTE ] Nate, if online poker stays around awhile, what's your screen name... So I can stay away from you. |

[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] He needs to negotiate it and have it approved by the conferees, many of whom are apparently quite opposed to it, albeit more on procedural grounds ("this doesn't belong here") than policy ones ("we heart gambling"). [/ QUOTE ] I just emailed my representative and used this procedural grounds argument. He's on the conference committee and voted in favor of H.R. 4411. He also has a reputation of ethics and honesty, so I reminded him of that and asked him to uphold the integrity of the legislature and let the Senate debate the merits of the gambling bill on its own, rather than sneaking it in through the back door. [/ QUOTE ] E-mails mean very little, place a call. [/ QUOTE ] That is just untrue |

Mr. K or Berge20,
How much weight does the Washington Times carry in conservative circles? Do you think today's editorial could have an impact? Thanks to both of you for your excellent insiders view of what's going on. JC |
