IF I am underage in the casino, do I still have to tip the dealer? What if I have a fake ID, can I give fake tips?

Hmm, i didn't mean to sound like that.

I fully acknowledge that the machines are the bread winners for the casino.

ya point being the casino's arent going to bend over backwards to provide good service to it's poker patrons when it's cutting into their bottom line.

Which is one of the reasons why we tip, a good dealer makes you money by managing the game well, and we want good dealers to be happy etc etc.

Plus working in the service industry (or any job where a signifigant portion of your salary comes from tips for that matter) sucks big balls, and while it may not be a reason for you to tip, it is for me.

I totally empethise with where you're coming from man, but I promise it's better for all involved to tip, and after you play a lot of live poker in the casino (esp at higher stakes) you'll see how much having a good friendly atmosphere can add to your return.

Part of this includes tipping dealers/waitresses and bullshitting with people that want to. It's part of the fun and being loose with your money in tipping situations subconsciously effects the way other patrons (your customers) handle their money as well.

have a good one

As a poker dealer, I'm happy when I get toked a buck...no matter the size of the pot. Anything over a buck is golden for me.

Believe me, getting stiffed is part of the job, but I learned for every stiff there is 10 tippers, so it all balances out at the end...so getting stiffed doesn't bother me anymore..

One more thing though. Casinos can't raise the rake too high (for the obvious reasons, especially with online poker blooming), so if the casinos were put in a situation where they had to pay dealers more, they would be stuck with their back against the wall.

>>Not true. When that scenario arises, the joint closes the poker room, or in fact, DOES raises the rake (and players STILL patronize the place. That's why you have the $6 rake in some places).

They can't drive out the players that show up everyday.

>>Joints do that every day. A new poker replacement sucker is born every day.

Do you tip a server at a restaurant when you get good service? It works the same.
All of these people are in a customer service job. The job depends on tips to actually make a living. Your friend is a huge exception, not the rule.

The casinos, and every other place that hire people who work for tips are not required to pay them more than half minimum wage. Did you catch that? 1/2 minimum wage. Thats not even 3 bucks an hour. And that is what the majority do.

So, don't tip, and hope your waitstaff isn't spitting in your food.

Ok Ill be the first to agree atleast in part with the OP
I think a big part of his point was why do we tip some people in certain professions and not others?
For example if i go to Mcdonalds I don't tip. However the other day I walked into my bneighborgood diner for breakfast and ordered and bagel and corn muffin TO GO yet still felt compelled to tip the waitress who put forth as much effort as the Mcdonalds worker, and as the OP stated I think its based more on tradition than anything else.

As far as dealers go:
In blackjack I tip nothing. The tips are pooled, 95% of dealers suck at best and at worst intentionally offer bad advice.

Poker dealers:
I used to only tip good dealers. In some casinos this was almost everyone. In many casinos it was almost noone ( my last trip to the Taj I saw one good dealer in about 15 hours of play.) However I noticed that some players did not like when I stiffed a crappy dealer so now Ill tip just to keep the fish happy.
On the Taj trip I had 2 extremes. One dealer was not only bad, but I started talkign to him when he first sat down and he started bitching to me about his lack of tips (he had gotten tips on the 2 pots he had dealt so far.)He went on to say that women get more tips and him being and old white guy gets screwed no matter how good he is (he happened to blow ass- in his one down he made 3 mistakes and was a slow dealer) He got nothing from me when I took d own an 800 dollar pot- I didnt care if this pissed the fish off this guy was a disgrace.
The only good dealer I had was the best Ive ever had. He got so many hands out, was on top of everything and kept the fish happy. I did not win a single pot when he was there (which was impressive as he literlerly got out almost twice as many hands in his down as anyone else.) He left before I could tip him, nut I went out of my way to find him, tip him and tell him what a good job he did.

I can't believe you forgot! Being in a casino is exciting!!!....and this is exactly why being a dealer in a casino will always be a sought after position.

[/ QUOTE ]

Have you ever noticed how many dealers only know the game they're dealing from dealing it? And how many are foriegners closer to middle age than young? Many aren't poker players or in it for the excitement.

They're in it because they had no other skills, could cheaply and easily learn to do it and make pretty good money.
