I can see where the old-school Metallica fans are coming from with the hate for post-Black/Load cds even though I like a lot of songs on them. But I think even post-Black apologists can't defend St. Anger.

Yeah, St. Anger does blow. I was mainly referring to Load/Reload and even the Black album, which a lot of hardcore old-school fans inexplicably hate.

Oh yeah, good one. So sad. Why is that bands so reliably turn into sucky garbage when they make the mainstream? Just keep f*cking doing what got you there!!

Are you kidding me??? Yo Bum Rush The Show rocked the rap world, It Takes a Nation of Millions is one of my top ten albums of all time. Fear of A Black Planet, more brilliance. Apocolypse 91, while there were a few good songs, was the end of PE as a rap era. Everything post Apocolypse 91 is garbage. Kill yourself or defend your position.

I am somewhere between you two. I liked By The Time I Get To Arizona, and a few other songs on that album. At the time I thought it was a bit sub-par, but far better than the other rap out there. Unfortunately, every thing after that was complete crap.

Yo Bum Rush The Show is also pretty terrible though. It is interesting only as a curiosity for a die hard fan, but it isn't close to their two great albums. PE made two of the all time great albums, one pretty good one, a mediocre one and then a sea of crap.

If you want to talk about Apocalypse 91, that's okay, but "Arizona" is one of the best PE songs ever. I don't understand how you can like Public Enemy and not love this song.

Yo! Bum Rush The Show: ehh

Nation of Millions: easy top 3 rap album of all time.

My choice for PE would be "He Got Game".

Agree with Numb but U2 made a nice comeback from the dip -

Rumour has it they are leaning towards hip-hop/electronica for their next album - God I hope not.

I don't think it gets any worse than these:

Float On - Modest Mouse
Good Riddance - Green Day
Hash Pipe - Weezer
King Nothing (and a handful of others)- Metallica
Dammit - Blink 182 (maybe?)

it'd be pretty difficult to argue that any of these guys had any chance of returning to their previous unadulterated awesomeness after these songs. for one I think the black album was still rife with thoughtful, introspective lyrics and a newly refined production quality that could have continued into awesome albums.

fwiw I got into most of these bands after they'd already made the switch to the mainstream.

STP - Big Bang Baby

And to whoever said Bulls on Parade by RATM, was that supposed to be a joke?
