Default Response email from Sen. George Allen

Just about what I expected:

[ QUOTE ]
Dear Kyle:

Thank you for contacting me regarding internet gambling. I appreciate your concerns and value the opportunity to respond.

Internet gambling can be an addictive habit that destroys individual financial lives and families. It is estimated that Americans will bet $5.9 billion on Internet gambling this year nearly half of the worldwide total of $12 billion. Numerous gambling websites currently fail to block access by children, lack effective safeguards against fraud and afford a tempting opportunity for organized crime and money launderers. As the father of three children, I understand the desire to ensure that children are protected from gambling websites.

As you may be aware, the recent house measure, H.R. 4411, passed with strong bi-partisan support of 317-93 and has the support of numerous sports organizations including the NFL, the NBA and Major League Baseball. Additionally, 49 State Attorneys General, including Virginia, support this legislation as a means of affording effective tools to law enforcement agencies to protect our children and to protect legal, responsible online users. Specifically this measure will:
- Clarify the Wire Act of 1961 to reflect current technology including the use of the Internet and other wireless communication devices;
- Regulate and prevent money transactions and payments related to illegal Internet gambling including illegal offshore companies beyond the criminal jurisdiction of the United States;
- Authorize the injunctions against individuals or companies who facilitate illegal Internet gambling; and
- Encourage international law enforcement cooperation in tracking and ending illegal gambling and related money laundering schemes.

I have also heard from a number of constituents who have expressed concern over this and similar measures. Please know that I will keep your thoughtful comments in mind should this measure come before me on the Senate floor.

Thank you for taking the time to contact me and please do not hesitate to contact me again about issues important to you. If you would like to receive an e-mail newsletter about my initiatives to improve America, please sign up on my website (<http://allen.senate.gov). It is an honor to serve you in the United States Senate, and I look forward to working with you to make Virginia and America a better place to live, lean, work and raise a family.

With warm regards, I remain

Sincerely,

Senator George Allen

Yeah, that's kind of not too encouraging. It's good that he dreams of everyone having the opportunity to "lean" in America though. Everyone in America should have the opportunity to lean if he/she so chooses, this way we'll be able to really make a dent in the childhood obesity problem.

On a side note, with all of these response letters being posted, I'm sure/hoping that someone is keeping a tally of each Senator's position? I'm sure someone thought of it before I just did.

Give me liberty or give me death. I am an adult in the what used to be the most free country on the face of the Earth. The right to make bad or good decisions is my choice. I make good decisions there for I am a winning poker player. Alcohal destroys lives every day. Bad food is causing a diabeties epidemic in America. Rap music incorages bad behavior. Yet still I see no need for you to try to protect me by making me a criminal doing something that provides me enjoyment and entertainment. This is a question of fredom. If you made it more legle it would be brought on shore and avalible for regulation that protects children and stops organized crime. Instead you want to push poker and gambling further underground. Playing online poker has provided me a safe and easy venue to play. Prior to this I had to play in underground card rooms which it is safe to say where run by criminals. If you take away my ablity to play online poker I will have no other choice except to play in underground card rooms. You say you are passing this bill to hinder organized crime. I say organized crime benifits from this measure because we will now be subject to thier suply........

Yep. I got the exact same letter.

In my letter to him I attempted to differentiate poker from the other forms of gambling but it looks like it fell on deaf ears.

Mr K, Berge, anyone... is there any merit in following up to a letter like this? Is it considered disrespectful/rude if I do? If not, what's the best way to go about it?

Default Senator Breakdown

Here's what I could find reading through 2+2 (just the Legislation forum) and a brief Google search. FOR indicates that they plan to vote for the bill (and against our position) or at least have sent letters to consitutents that have been posted that seem to suggest this.

[NOTE: In my Google search, I found references to an amateur sporting prohibition sponsored by McCain and others. I did not include their viewpoint on that in this list, figuring that they could likely be unrelated. On the other hand, other viewpoints that seemed relevant have been included and cited.]

Any corrections and/or additions are welcome.

If we came up with an exhaustive list - this might be better served as a sticky or something.

I got a strong ... neutral from Dick Durbin when I wrote him on this issue some months ago.

April 13, 2006

Dear Mr. Silver:

Thank you for your message regarding internet gambling and several bills that have been introduced in the House of Representatives -- H.R. 4411, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2005, introduced by Congressman Leach, and H.R. 4777, the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act, introduced by Congressman Goodlatte. I appreciate hearing from you on this issue.

The debate over Internet gambling has generated strong public interest.
Gambling may have an adverse effect on some individuals and communities.
Others enjoy an occasional wager or poker game without trouble and believe that doing so should be a legal option for adults.

Currently, there is no legislation pending in the Senate addressing Internet gambling. H.R. 4411 and H.R. 4477 have been introduced in the House of Representatives, and I will keep your concerns in mind in case these bills or related legislation comes before the Senate.

Thank you once again for contacting me. Please feel free to stay in touch.

Sincerely,
Richard J. Durbin
United States Senator

Default Feingold, Russell D. (D - WI): ?

A friend of mine stopped in his office and talked to one of his assistants. He was led to believe that Mr. Feingold would be opposing this legislation.

I hope this helps.
