From one of the articles:

[ QUOTE ]

Final table play on the last day of the championship event ...started at 2 p.m. Aug. 10.

About three hours beforehand, at 10:52 a.m., Gold left a message for Leyser, according to the complaint, in which he tried to reassure Leyser that he would be getting half of whatever after-tax winnings Gold won that day.

"I promise you - you can keep this recording on my word - there's no possible way you're not going to get half after taxes," Leyser claims that Gold said in the telephone message. "So please just be with me. I can't imagine you're going to have a problem with it. I just don't want any stress about any money or any of that (expletive) going on today, or even after the end of the day."

Later in the recording, Gold allegedly said: "But please just trust me. You've trusted me the whole way, you can trust me a little bit more. I promise you there's no way anybody will go anywhere with your money. It's your money."

[/ QUOTE ]

First, if Gold was going to back out, think he is going to leave that message as evidence?

Second, that "after taxes" sounds like Gold didn't realize he could have Harrahs give Leyser his cut and Leyser would be liable for the taxes on that part.

Thirdly, sounds like Leyser had already been pressuring him, even before the final day.

Also, I am still unclear as to why Jamie Gold ever promised half of his winnings in the first place.

[/ QUOTE ]

Despite his bluster, do you really think he imagined he would make the top 20?
And some reports made it seem like Gold wanted Leyser to play instead, but Bodog said Gold had to play. So then it would have been half of what Leyser won.

I didn't realize that Gold and Leyser have only known each other since July. If that's the case, I assume that they're both just covering their asses and nothing more. 12 million is a lot of money and it doesn't surprise me one bit that there are lawyers involved at this point. They probably just want to get this done in a manner that best suits both parties.

I still think JG is a douchebag, FWIW.

We haven't heard Jamie or Jamie's people say that he (Jamie) does not intend to pay Leyser.

What I took from the PR statements was that Jamie wanted to settle the matter with Leyser without bringing in legal representation.

I never got nor do I have the impression (for the time being) that Jamie intends to stiff the dude.

I think we should wait and see how it plays out before we add this as another nail in Jamie's public opinion coffin.

[/ QUOTE ]
Yea settle = pay less than he owes.
If he intends to pay, then pay and the lawsuit is over.

Yeah, I read this, but I don't understand why Gold would have promised his seat away in the first place to someone he hardly knew for services not worth close to 10K. It seems there is much more to the story than has been made public so far.

But Gold actually made it BIG. How on Earth does this justify a $6M payday?

If this is how it went, it's pure greed and makes me feel pretty sick.

[/ QUOTE ]

Right on! I agree. Another thing I've been wondering, why the hell was Harrah's going to pay this gold digger dude 12 million dollars in the first place?!?! For what? For a few days of work?

Come on, I've never seen a greed like that. A normal guy would be happy to get a thousand or two for his troubles. I say, pay them both five grands and the initial investment and they should be thankful and happy. If not, to hell with them! (The same goes with all the lotto winners etc. greedy bastards.)

And Gold is an idiot for making a bad deal.

[/ QUOTE ]

I doubt that anyone here knows all the facts of the situation yet. My understanding was that there was one seat and initially it was not clear which of them was going to take it. Before that was settled, they both agreed that whoever played, they would split any money.

That's true, but at that point he wouldn't be the infamous ME champ with this dark cloud hanging over him. He'd be the 2nd place finisher and who ever remembers them?

[/ QUOTE ]

Agreed. I hardly ever hear the names Sam'my' Farha and David Williams anymore.

I believe David Williams changed his name to Brian Pumper. Or maybe it was the other way around? I always forget these things.

Gold smooth-talked bodog into buying his $10k seat if he could get the celebrities there.
Gold then realized he didn't have any celebrities to get and he asked Leyser to help him out.

If Leyser hadn't helped him out there would have been no celebrities (hypothetically) and Gold wouldn't have even been in the WSOP in the first place.

Getting 2 stupid celebrities shouldn't be worth $10k.
But that's what bodog wanted Gold to do.
And gold was too lame to be able to do this on his own (despite the big game I'm sure he talked of himself).
Leyser totally saved him on this one.

Although if I was bodog and I saw the celebrities they had gotten I would have said, "Sorry...we thought you meant REAL celebrities for a $10k seat. These guys are MAYBE worth a $1500 2nd-chance event seat for you. Good luck."
