Well I just met a manager at the Lexus dealership here in san jose. He said if I wanted to give selling cars a shot to come see him. I think I would love the job and be good at it. I wa just wondering things like: is it a stressful job? Fun? I would think you would have to put in long hours. About how many per week? Would you recomend selling cars? Any info would help.

There's some article on Edmunds.com about a writer who becomes a car salesman for a month or two and then relates his experience. It's a pretty good read.

Stressful only in the sense that if you don't sell, you don't eat. Straight commission jobs take a special mindset.

As for hours, it is a retail sales position. Which means holidays, weekends and evenings. A typical two salesteam schedule would look something like this.

8-4 every other day. 3-close in between. Tuesdays off. Wed., while other team was off, you work open to close. Every third weekend off. Of course, during other team's weekend off, you would work open to close Fri, Sat, Sun. A nice long weekend. You can pile up the hours fast. And don't forget, on Friday, even on your day off, you are expected to attend the Friday morning sales meeting

Alot of dealerships are getting away from the straight commission, especially those who are doing well selling the lower cost foreign cars.

Like others have stated, if you have any specific questions, I'll be happy to answer them in this thread.

Do they give you a phrase book with all the standard sayings in it, like "So, what's it going to take to get you to buy this car today."

Why do some dealers have a policy of not answering the question when you ask them the price of a used car? They always come back with something like, "Well, how much did you want to spend?" I don't do business with such people.

Where do you go and what do you do when you say, "I'll have to go check with my manager on that."?

Theres a reality show on A&E about a car dealership. Surprisingly, a guy actually did go talk to his manager after saying that to a customer. But I guess that could just be because it was being taped.

I do not think most of the used car market should go any lower than it already is. As for the pm stuff, I guess I wanted to help by addressing the op without the noise of the forum affecting the discussion, but if anyone has any specific ?'s i would be glad to help.
sincerely
