I apologize, I posted before reading the entire thread and I reiterated many things that were said on all sides of the discussion.
That being said, it really seems like much of the focus about Gold's dominance is after he had over half of the chips (Lee donated over 15 m, remember). Sure, he played the big stack to perfection after that, but he was really struggling before and the stacks were rather quickly evening out. And on the the days leading up to the FT he had 2000 AA>KK's . I want to bring this nonsense to some sort of agreement. All the haters and the lovers are going to great lengths to bolster their point. Almost the entire tournament hinged on that QQ<JJ hand with Lee. (Lee had 1/5 of the chips) Haters: "OMG, the donk gave him 1/5 of the chips, he;s such a donkey luckbox fish" Lovers: "OMG, the donk gave him 1/5 of the chips, he totally played excellent and clearly ran over the field" Neither is true, it's just some [censored] that happened. Crazy [censored] happens. So can we have some decent discussion about the pros and cons of capping the number of entrants? |

I'm just amazed at how many people here want to rag on this guy because he won't be a "good ambassador" for poker. Why would anyone care if the WSOP ME winner is a good ambassador or not? He's just a guy who plowed through 8800 people. Nice job and enjoy the 12 million but I don't need to see him every week on Pokerstars, etc. Raymer was a breath of fresh air - a semi-pro who could actually talk about the hands he played. Hachem hasn't done anything special since except try and cash in on his "pass the sugah" exclamation. Moneymaker won the big one and while he's a nice guy he didn't do anything after that (ok, one ft on wpt). Varkoni? Gold will probably fall into the Varkoni mold. Nothing wrong with that.
Also, lets remember that there is a big difference between trash talk and table talk. What Matasuw does is trash talk and that should be discouraged as he is disparaging his opponents but what Gold did was simply table talk to try and induce a call or fold. Sometimes it wasn't pretty to watch but it was effective. And Phil Gordon kept saying all night that Gold never lied and that the other players would pick up on this. Did Gold set up the final hand to play that way? He never lied except when he put Wyskia all in for the title. Maybe we should be giving him some major props for that? If that had been a pro like Daniel we would be slobbering over ourselves to do just that. Lastly, some of the stuff I'm reading about how Gold was somehow disrespectful to AC is nauseating. AC is a pro and nothing Gold said was out of line. If he wants to show his bluffs then AC is more than happy to let him. |

Im just gonna take this time to say I really like Jamie Gold.
No he is not even close to the top players in the world, but he played good, ran very well, and won the tournament. Congratulations to him. |

Except for the hands where he did his talking he seemed withdrawn and aloof. |

Does anybody have any thoughts about capping the number of entrants, and perhaps raising the buy-in? I think it's the only way for the ME to be taken seriously again (I might be in the minority here) and move it away from being an expensive lottery ticket. [/ QUOTE ] Will never happen. The WSOP is Harrah's massive money machine and they're riding it all the way to the bank. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they did the opposite: lower the buy-in and remove any cap on the field size so they could really maximize profits. My opinion is that it should be $25,000 to enter and that the cap should be no higher than 2000 players (perhaps even less). But let's face it. It's not going to happen. |

I had a problem with him at two points in particular. The first was when he got Lee all-in with QQ over JJ, ran over to someone in the stands and said "I just can't make the wrong play! It's not my fault! I just can't make the wrong play!" Classless.
Then, when he took what appeared to be his first and only beat at the table, he was seemed overly distressed, and kept muttering "I can't play any better than that." Over and over and over. Ok, Jamie, we get it, you outplayed him. Saying it once would have been fine, repeating it over and over was irritating. Other than that, he seemed ok. eastbay |
