at first i thought the people that said this thread was retarded were being harsh, but then i actually thought about it and im starting to come to the same conclusion
can someone please explain to me how a main event winner who is already successful in the media/public relations business is not WAY more likely to improve poker's image and mass public appeal than someone else? in fact, as far as the future of poker is concerned, i think he is a lot closer to being the best possible winner out of the final 9 than he is to being the worst the fact that a lot of people here already knew about his father's ALS well before he won or anything was televised, to me, is clear evidence that he will be using his talents and experience from hollywood to create a positive public image for both himself and poker (anyone who thinks that there is no way he would spin his father's illness to enhance his image pretty much has no clue how hollywood works) and as far as demographics goes i think Gold winning will have a bigger influence on probably the most important segment of the population, celebrities. while poker was definitely a hot celebrity fad for awhile, im sure it is on the decline, having a Hollywood guy win the WSOP will do more to keep celebrities playing poker than anyone else, and this obviously translates to greater popularity in the average american household so in conclusion, despite the fact that we all wanted AC to win, to speculate that Jamie Gold was the worst possible winner as the thread title and OP clearly do is ludicrous |

Worst possible winner?
You're seriously asking this question? The worst possible winner would be a convicted pedophile who self-published a book containing necrophilia poems. Start with a reasonable premise and I bet you get better responses. |

Gold is great for the game and i'll tell you why.
(drum-roll) If a young kid or woman wins, then another slew of broke young kids and women flood the poker scene. Great for the low stakes and levelling up sharks. But gold wins, and now, I hope, a slew of rich 'middle-aged' white guys will flood the games, thinking, 'ZOMG, I can do this too!' Not fish, but whales. Do you see why? That being said, however, I must add that the Gold defense (his playing ability, not his 'good for the game-ness' or personality) is drastically overcompensating in response to the Gold hating. Which is understandable, but unrealistic. Gold outplayed people the same way Danneman did. Black's TT holds up and we aren't talking about a 'meltdown' now. Save for once in the FT, there hasn't been a documented hand where he lost a coinflip or had a big pair (1 in 5 remember) cracked. And there were sooo many times where people were in the position to put so many chips in with him. The amount of QQ>JJ and KK>QQ matchups he stumbled upon is unprecedented, the equivalent of a winning lottery ticket. To say he outplayed anybody (lagtard bluffs, yawn; the calling and folding stations at the FT outplayed themselves) is laughable. The only thing more laughable is his talkative, 'i'm gonna get a read' table act, which only gave everybody else good reads. The haters are annoying because they are stretching, and the hate is so ungrounded in reality, but having the defense of him equally ungrounded is also as annoying. |

Dude, sorry to to break it to you, but a 36 year old man isn't middle aged for the same reasons a 19 year old isn't a teenager. [/ QUOTE ] Actually, a 19 year old is a teenager (here's a clue: he's nineteen). Maybe you mean he's no longer an adolescent, which can vary based on cultures, personalities, and a bunch of other stuff. But teen years (13-19) are pretty cut and dry. |

People are beginning to take my OP out of context, thinking I meant "worst possible..in the world" rather than "worst possible general concept" but it's whatever. I think this thread needs to die.
Alot of people have made good points about him bringing in older, rich businessmen type. So that's good. And despite his interviews saying otherwise early in the week, it looks like he's going to be more public than anticipated. So the whole point of the thread is largely moot in the first place. |

"I wanted a woman to win."
Shallow, shallow, shallow. Did they give you a "Conformist" award at school too? |

Cunningham would have been worse.
1. You have to be a pro to win at the game. 2. Poker is supposed to be fun. Alan looks like he is awaiting a proctoscope. 3. Photogenic? Are you kidding? |

I only read about 3/4 of the thread, so if this has already been said... tough
As Sirio(?) pointed out, a middle-aged winner is better than a young kid; they're more established financially. Maybe it's been discussed before, but I think an asian winner would do "more for the game" than another white guy. Macao is closing in on Vegas for gambling income, and actually passed the strip casinos for the first time this year (I think). Las Vegas casino owners have known for years that asia was the next huge expansion market, and they spent gazillions of dollars to gain footholds in Macao. |
