Some of you, including the OP, border on pathetic. Why is it worth the typing time used to carry on about his arrogance and desire not to live the life of a World Champion? Good for him for winning what has become a lottery and wanting to enjoy his money and not pretend that he is a champion of any caliber a la Hachem, Raymer et al.
The only point worth discussing was Chan's assistance; which was unethical. Beyond that, this is a mix of jealousy that you all weren't this years luck box (BTW--as long as we have fields in the +2000 numbers EVERY ME winner will be a luck box)and a complete ignorance of what this event has become. Hopefully, it will be obvious to you all that the HORSE event should determine who the true world champion is -- not this two week bingo-esque marathon to see who can suck out more. |

I just watched the clip again, and found the exact moment that rubbed me the wrong way. Here's a bad transcription:
Belsky: "What's the biggest factor in your run this year?" Prick: "I'm playing the other players while they are playing their cards... I'm figuring how to beat them, while they are trying to just figure out how to get the best cards and get their money in there. Sooner or later I seem to be able to trick most of them into giving me all their money." Later in the interview, he did say nice things about his family, and how the money will be good to spread around with his fans. He said that he's learning to be a great player. All those things are good things. But Talking smack about your defeated opponents is gradeshool [censored]. As I said before, I could really care less. But I seriously doubt that anyone here would appreciate it if they guy who just beat them out of the biggest tournament in the universe rubbed it in their face. |

Here's a guy that IMO plays Ok, no problem with that. He has claimed that he 'doesn't want to carry the responsibility of World Champion' essentially it's too much trouble...(but would like the money..) that's in print and on video. I thought he was disrespectful to Allen (among others') when he knocked him out (with the worst hand). He CONTINUES to get Chan's opinions DURING THE GAME (one player to a hand?) I question his ettiquete, table talk goes too far IMO. The deck has hit this guy who appears from that couldn't carry the lunch of most pros IMHO. He acts IMO like he's God's gift. Sorry but this guy currently disgusts me and I'm sad that he apparently will represent the 'World Champion' for a game that most of us love. What a joke. My opinion, sorry if I offend anyone, it's not intentional. Turned out to be one of the weakest final tables in recent years IMHO. [/ QUOTE ] I couldnt agree more. I hoped for the swedes but gained ALOT of respect for Alan C during the final. Liked his play and tablemanners alot. I cant understand how they let this Gold guy talk in the way he did WHEN IT WASNT HIS ACTION. The ugly bastard should just shut the f*ck up I hope he goes crazy and starts playing big cashgames so that he can go bust |

From what I saw/read I don't think Gold played bad, but if you're going to use the hand vs. Lee with QQ as an example of playing well, you're wrong. Gold's play there was horrible. He played to get QQ all in in a spot where the only hands that Lee could have crush him. HE just got lucky that Lee made a substantially worse play.

Granted it seemed like every flop hit him for 4 days running, but it sure feels like he had an enormous number of hands where he busted his opponent and had the best hand when the chips went in - and seemed to do a darn good job of avoiding doubling up his opponents when they had the best hand, which is hard to do when you're playing 80% of your hands. Not that I'm specifically defending his remark; classy would have been to say simply "I played well and got lucky too." But I wonder how many of us would have given a flawless interview in the same situation - he must have had about a bazillion thoughts running around his brain at the time. |

This has to be the most ludicrous whining post I've seen in a while. First off, just because a guy entered the main event doesn't mean he has to 'want' to be the face of poker for the next year if he wins. Maybe he has a life he likes, maybe he's uncomfortable with being out in front of the press, etc., etc., How can you judge him because he's honest and says that he's not sure he wants that responsibility?
Second, sure he was lucky in some hands, but he was unlucky in others. He lost with AK to AT when they were all in on a K high flop and a T hit the turn. He's lucky because the guy calls his reraise with JJ against his QQ? That was a bad play. When Allen hit the straight against him on the river, I think he said he had the ten for trips -- assuming he did he showed a lot of restraint for checking the river. Sure he was lucky when he hit the open-ended straight toward the end but he was also very aggressive and forced his opponents to a decision when he had tons of chips. Also, if Paul really had the open-ended straight/flush draw it was a terrible fold. He was rarely in a large pot as a dog. He did get lucky that his coin-flip won against Allen, but have you watched most of the past final tables in the WSOP and the WPT? Have you seen the suckouts that usually make your poker pro idols the champion? Did you see how Jesus beat TJ in 2000? He had at least one crazy suckout to survive. How about the way Doyle catched cards to win his two bracelets? It goes on and on. I think if you really watched this final table and compared it to others you will find that Gold was much less lucky than almost any other final table winner. Now of course his competition probably didn't play quite as well. As for the table talk... it was all in good fun and it was far less than many of the pros do. The other thing about his table talk... which Gordon picked up on... was that he was rarely lying. Anyway, he played his big stack great against the competition he had. To rant against him is just absurd. |

ONE reason is that he's one of the few thousand players that DIDN'T WANT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF HAVING TO CARRY THE TITLE 'WORLD CHAMPION' ('But I DO want the money'). Makes me sick. His arrogence, as he said he constantly talked and lied to players (not outplaying them)...he should be a salesman, not a 'player'. That was the best part of his game IMO. Very little doubt in MY mind that if Chan didn't get so involved with him someone that WANTED to be World Champion would have been. His deceit, constant [censored]. How often have you seen a Pro run off at the mouth at the Final table of the Big one? Nothing like this. Just dummy up and play, PLAY, DON'T SELL. Never. [/ QUOTE ] Wow you're even nittier than I thought... |
