Gnocchi (no-key) - thought it was no-chee; this might fall under the catagory of rio grand vs rio gran-day, but there is no real way to englishize gnocchi. also, if no-key is wrong, someone elighten me, since i just learned this.

edit: wikipedia confirms boro and eld are right, i was missing the NYO...

[/ QUOTE ]

versus. I'd always pronounce it "verse," because you always see it abbreviated as "vs."

Familiar is not Fur-mil-iar.

Suposedly is not Su-pos-a-bly.

Nuclear is not Nu-cu-lar.

I actually don't care about people who say sherbet (sherbeRt) and chipotle (chi-pole-tay) wrong. It's like so many people mispronounce it that if you keep caring, you'll go mad. Plus, it really takes too much effort and sounds stupid to say chipotle correctly. And it makes you sound like a pronunciation snob.

I've met many people who can't seem to pronounce "Massachusetts". I think they're being lazy. It's not that hard.

[/ QUOTE ]

for the longest time I've pronounced it "Taxachusetts". Woops.

I feel like this needs its own thread, unless it's been discussed here already. If there is a standard, but incorrect pronunciation of a non-english word, is it better to pronounce the word in the American fashion (bru-SHetta)
or try to say it "properly" like an native speaker? Cuz I bet if I ordered bru-SKetta around a lot of my friends they'd think I was a douchebag. However they are idiots.

And does it change depending on the setting--it's ok to try and roll your Rs in a mexican restaurant in mexico but at chi-chis you should probably just say torTIya...???
