[ QUOTE ] I wouldn't put krupa or rich in the top 10 for jazz. [/ QUOTE ] in general I would never put a big band drummer in the top ten for jazz. The nature of a Big Band vs a Small Combo group helps hide a weaker drummer in a big band where he'd get exposed big time in a combo [/ QUOTE ] So Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich were "weak"? |

So Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich were "weak"? [/ QUOTE ] I wouldn't say that, but I have a charlie parker recording w/rich on drums where he drops several beats behind bird and proceeds to lose the form. this is not exactly greatest drummer of all time material. --turnipmonster |

I don't think the existence of a bad recording makes him weak. Krupa and Rich were great drummers. Maybe not greatest, but great is great enough for my tastes. |

I had never heard that story. Judge for yourself: http://youtube.com/watch?v=zL-Sbpw0j...mond%20herrera He does use "triggers" though. Instead of recording the actual bass drum sound, his bass drum tells an electronic drummer to make a bass drum sound. Wiki says he does that because a natural bass drum sound would be too muddy. [/ QUOTE ] Watching this felt oddly like watching one of those Dance Dance Revolution videos. |

For rock, Damon Che deserves your attention.
For jazz, can't believe nobody mentioned Max Roach. The man embodies the triumph of timing and creativity over technical wizardry. |
