You can always opt out of the time pot (by paying your $8) and then get to take full advantage of others' adjustments.

I'm pretty sure that that's the douchebaggiest idea I've ever heard.

Why? In AC people do it all the time. I did get that (your) reaction when I've out to Vegas.

The time pot is meant to speed up the game (so the dealer doesn't have to make change for $7 or $9). If someone is collecting the time pot and putting it up for the dealer, it doesn't slow the game down for you to toss 'em $8.

Therefore, most players react by stealing more.

is this even true?

i'm pretty sure most poople don't tighten up as much as they should in the BB, so stealing less in general is probably correct. it obviously depends on the big blind though.

as for the original question, it's something i think about every time i'm in the big blind in a time pot. i'm pretty sure sitting out the round and paying the $8 would be less -EV unless the game is ridiculously good.

time pots are dumb. they only work because people don't understand them.

here's another question:

should you defend your BB 100% of the time in time pots against observant regulars knowing that you'll be playing against them regularly and it'll cause them to steal less?

I've seen adjustments to time pots many times at Commerce and the Bellagio. (Time pots were not allowed at Bay 101 when the game was a time charge game). But then again I've also seen plenty of people happily open limp in LP in time pots.
