NEW JERSEY STAR-LEDGER: Rich Chere reports "(s)alary cap problems may force the Devils to trade center Scott Gomez if the team loses an arbitration hearing set for Friday in Toronto." Chere writes contract negotiations between the two sides have broken off and appear headed to a nasty arbitration showdown. The Devils are believed to have offered Gomez a one-year, $4 million contract, which is considered "25-50%" below what he could make on the open market. Chere also writes if Gomez gets an award of $5-$6 million he'll likely be dealt.

Devils aren't looking too hot...

Chere is incorrect. If Gomez receives a full 6 he might be dealt, but I doubt it, because the Devils would easily deal Sergei Brylin, Jason Wiemer, or Richard Matvichuk to keep Gomez in a Devils' uniform. By the end of the summer and certainly by the end of the season, I expect Vladimir Malakhov's contract to be shipped to Pittsburgh or Washington.

Gomez may leave in free agency anyway, which the Devils can't prevent if Gomez goes after the $. Several Devils have already taken a paycut to try to keep the team together.

Sharks trade Nils Ekman and goalie prospect Patrick Ehelechner for a 2nd round pick. I guess everyone kinda knew Nils was somewhat worthless - I'm surprised they got a 2nd for him since that will be a high second, but maybe this Ehelechner has potential too. Ekman could score 30 with Crosby though.

I don't like Pittsburgh adding salary.

Sharks have a few solid goaltending prospects, so I don't mind losing Ehelechner. Dumping Ekman's salary and him as a player, allowing room for one of the younger guys with higher potential step in, and getting a 2nd pick is pretty awesome.

How deep is next years draft?

[censored] arbitration judges... Danny Briere offered 1 year $5 million contract. Previous salary was under $2 million. Wish I could get a 150% raise.

We'll miss you.

Completely ridiculous. Havlat got $6M in Chicago, so they're using that as a precedence. I can't imagine Buffalo will accept this, especially with another 7 (I think) players left in arbitration.

I completely agree, very unfortunate for Buffalo right now.

on side note, it looks like Recchi will go back to the Pens.
