now that party has a non-download version of their software, would it be possible to play on one of those PDA smartphones that have web browsers?

I can confirm that it does run on a mac. However it is play money only during the beta testing phase.

Hi there,
thanks for your feedback.
The PartyPoker NoDownload beta is available on Win98+, Mac and Linux, for browsers IE5, Firefox and Safari. PDA is not supported yet, as PDAs have different system requirements and java versions.
We are currently working on getting Real Money games into the Beta as well. Please bare with us a bit, as we want to put enough detail and security into a version, which plays for Real Money.
Any feedback on the Beta yet would be great. Please send us anything you find at [email protected]
Thanks !
