Vegetarians - if you have kids, are you raising them in a strictly vegetarian household, or cooking meat on occasion for them / allowing them to eat it outside of the home?

[/ QUOTE ]

Don't have kids yet, but when we do, they will be raised vegetarian. They will, however, have to make that choice themselves eventually.

[/ QUOTE ]

FWIW Elaine and her sister became vegetarians in early childhood, and they are both healthy, fit and attractive women.

Coincidentally today the NYTimes has a brief review of two new books on the topics we have been discussing:

Serious answer: when the cat dies, decomposers "feed" on the dead organic matter. The mushrooms in the picture do this.

there are lots of animals that have more intelligence and even compassion than some retarded people

there are many documented cases of dogs, pigs, dolphins, (i'm sure the list goes on) saving human lives without being forced to.

there are many cases of retarded people laying around, pissing and [censored] on themselves helplessly.

hence there are many animals with more intelligence and compassion than some retarded people.

We are raising our child vegetarian.

[/ QUOTE ]

My sister and my girlfriend have been vegetarians in the past, but they stopped because it was too difficult to get all of the nutrients they needed on a regular basis.

Is there a higher risk that a child raised on a vegetarian diet won't get all the nutrients he or she needs?

Well it isn't really "chance". You have to educate yourself a bit and make sure you are feeding your kid properly. This is true of non-vegetarian parents too.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'm not trying to give you a hard time. I have no problems with people who choose not to eat meet and I'm sure you'll be a great parent, but I'm not sure that raising a child as a vegetarian doesn't have risks associated with it no matter how knowledgeable the parents are.

Kids don't always eat everything their parents tell them to. If a kid is eating a diet with redundant sources of a given nutrient, then if he or she doesn't eat enough of one food, it's not that big of a deal. If a kid is eating a diet where some food items are the only sources for essential nutrients, then it stands to reason that there would be a greater chance that the kid would choose not to eat something important.

I'm not imposing anything.

[/ QUOTE ]

You did nothing short of call meat-eaters monstrous murders.

If this isn't an (unsuccessful) attempt to make non-vegetarians feel bad, I don't know what is. And that, at least in my book, is attempting to impose morals on others.

[/ QUOTE ]

You have got to be joking.

Have you read the title of this thread? The OP says eating a vegetarian meal is "torture." I think you're taking my comments out of context.

But if you really do feel like a murderer, maybe you should stop killing animals so that you can eat your savory dead flesh.

Elaine,

"For the record, anyone who is upset about me calling meat 'flesh' or 'dead animal' needs to come to terms with their own meat-eating choices, because obviously, if you were OK with eating meat, my calling it 'flesh' wouldn't wig you out. "

That is ridiculous. I have no problem with those terms and find them silly and amusing, as well as finding it amusingly disingenuous of you to act like you're not trying to be inflammatory to some degree by using those specific terms in place of the simply appropriate word "meat."

The argument you make here could also be used to say there's nothing wrong with using the words "murderer" "baby-killer" and other such terms when describing pro-choice individuals because those using the words believe they are "right."

People can use whatever words they want, but they can also choose to use words for a certain purpose, and I don't believe either of the types of word choices above reflect mature adult discussion about differing viewpoints.

There is no "top." And if there were, OMNIVORES wouldn't be it. Carnivores would.

hogwash.

Dogs have a "protective instinct" for their owners that has, on occasion, resulted in life-saving actions. That is not intelligence or compassion.

I have never heard of a pig or dolphin saving a human life, but feel free to illuminate me. However, I'd be willing to bet that it has zero to do with intelligence or compassion.
