[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I'm guessing the OP would be the guy who'd object to taking his shoes off when entering Japanese households. He's say they should have told him beforehand to wear clean socks. [/ QUOTE ] Wow, there's a huge difference between finding food objectionable and finding a PEOPLE'S CULTURE objectionable. Vegetarianism is NOT a culture. It's a dietary choice, no more, no less. [/ QUOTE ] Quite wrong. Many people are vegetarians for religious reasons, and some are so for ethical reasons. [/ QUOTE ] What religion states that being a vegetarian is a must??? |

Elaine, I noticed you say things like "So, yeah, it would be rude of them to invite me over and serve me dead animal" "have you invited them over for dinner recently and served them flesh?" Certainly you like to point out the brutality of what meat eaters are doing. You are a vegetarian, and I respect your opinion. However, I remember you posting (perhaps under Otis) that you are pro-choice. What it be OK, if I described you as not being "pro-choice" but as a "supporter of murder" or a "backer of fetus killing"? (certainly you can understand how I would want to point out the brutality of what the people who dont side with me are doing) [/ QUOTE ] wow I was about to make this same exact post. |

Q,
I am a little bit more on your side than the rest of the posters but not by much. I definitely think it was rude of them to not mention the fact that the meal will be all vegetarian. Regardless of how hard they worked to make the food they need to understand that a good portion of the population cannot stand that [censored]. I do think you should eat the food simply as a matter of courtesy. I would try a little of everything. Maybe that will spread out the bad taste. That said, you cannot rule out the possibility that these people are the radical types and like to prosthelytize guests by forcing them to eat rabbit food. Did they constantly ask you how the food tasted? |

I think the key to this thread is that it wasn't just mainstream nonmeat food being offered. It sounds as if it was extremly unordinary food. I agree that if the host had brought out normal food void of meat then there'd be no reason for a post, but if the food was extremly creative vegetarian crap I think there can be a reason to be upset. There's no reason they have to serve you meat, but the least they could do is have something edible.

the polite thing to do is to not act like a little kid and eat the food like a normal person. It's not going to make you vomit, just be an adult and try something new, it's [censored] vegetables not cow dick [/ QUOTE ] Hahaha nice. |

[ QUOTE ] "Oh, thanks, that sounds nice, but I'm a really picky eater -- a meat and potatoes guy [/ QUOTE ] WTF??? Since when is "Meat and potatoes" considered "picky?" This is ridiculous. NON VEGETARIAN IS THE NORM. VEGETARIANS ARE THE EXCEPTION, NOT THE RULE. [/ QUOTE ] Vegetarians may be the exception but VEGETABLES are not. |
