i think the top is better because it covers so much more then a book like harrington 1 could cover. however, i too thought harrington 1 was terrific. but my problem with your choice of harrington 1 is that harrington 2 is a much better book then harrington 1. while both are great, and i recommend both, harrington 2 is more complex and introduces several advanced concepts that have never been discussed elsewhere.

top, ssh, hpfap, harrington 1 &2, etc., are all great books, i am not trying to start a debate about the "best", i am just surprised at choosing 1 over 2, and i wonder what your reasons were?

I like Theory of Poker because of the great general information in it, and more so as I'm working on several different games, BUT... I definately prefer reading Harringtons books. Also Doyle's SS NL chapter.

All three HoH books.
SSHE should be mentioned, though, even if it is limit.
ToP just because those fundamental concepts are so key to playing winning poker.

Totally agreed.

I add Mike Caro's book of tells for live play.
Middle Limit Holdem for exactly that.
I like Super System becuase Doyle teaches things about hands that you can only learn from experience.

I actually review all the books I read here.

I have read over 40 books. Now I am finishing HOH3 and the new NL book.

I have found many books helpful in developing my poker knowledge. Super System, Theory of Poker and Sklanksky's Holdem for Advnced Players are among my favorites. However The Psychology of Poker by Alan N. Schoonmaker hs been the most influential. Many poker books on the market discuss strateies that work mostly against top players. The PoP helps you get into the minds of all kinds of players and react accordingly. It is a must read.

i think theory of poker is the best poker book ever written.

[/ QUOTE ]

I completely agree with this.

I think the best poker book for beating a specific game is SSHE.

[/ QUOTE ]

Absolutely agree. Im reading both at the moment.

How do people rate:

Caro's book on tells?
The super system series?

Looks like im going to have to add HOH series to my wish list.

If you play live Caro's Book of Tells is something you really should read. Picking up on tells is something which can be learned. After reading Caro you find yourself generally more alert during hands in which you're not involved, which is a good thing.

I'll spare you the long story, but I remember immediately after finishing Caro I spotted a guy doing something which told me (with a high degree of certainty) that he had the king of clubs (turned out to be accurate). Without Caro I wouldn't have figured that out on my own.

Book of Tells is a little dated but it is still a classic. (I'm surprised he hasn't done a revised version). Anyone who plays live would benefit in reading it.

The Super System series is useful, though not vital. Of the two, SSII is much more geared to the modern game. No one can deny the importance of SS in its heyday, but it has been surpassed by the sorts of offerings found at 2+2 and other places. Read it if you like poker lit., but there's no need to rush out to the store.

The HOH series is outstanding. Few, if any, poker books can equal HOH (though I'm not done with HOH3).

Play Poker like the Pros By Hellmuth. I always suggest it as required reading to new players.

This is in way of making sure the next generation of fish get off to a good start, yes?

I've glanced at it on bookstore shelves. The eight-or-better stud chapter is a recipe for bankruptcy.

[/ QUOTE ]

Easily one of the worst books I've read. I actually gave it away.
