i just received an email from TAP with next year's schedule. It has confirmed that I am screwed. my play?

Post the name of the school/town/district. Perhaps some random letters to the editor from Oscar Oliver Thomas would start the ball rolling

Bob,

If you're not resigned to being [censored], which it seems like you aren't, I still vote for going over TAP's head.

I reiterate my previous comment: approach the principal (or science department head) of another school in your district and inquire about a transfer. This is a teaching job, not the Army; people in my industry (IT/IS) change/leave jobs all the time for much less reason than this, without detrimental effects.

They are screwing you with their schedule; you are free to return the favor.

Also, keep in mind the metagame issues here: if you roll over now, and TNG gets your plum classes this year, what makes you think you'll get them back next year?

Your options have already been discussed: I favor making the best of it while searching for a new gig.

Here's another thought. From one of you previous posts I assume that you've already signed a contract for this coming year (or you are on deadline to sign it now). You probably can resign from any contract that you signed as long as you give 1 month's notice. So smile at everyone now and immediately contact the best headhunter you can find who specializes in the field of education. My experience dates back to the 80's but I remember that there were plenty of agencies back then. Plenty of school systems will be scrambling to fill unanticipated vacencies during the summer. Have them find you a job for this year (even if you end up paying the fee) and on July 29th step into the principal's office, ask that TAP step in as well, and then tell them both to kiss your physics-teachin' butt.

Then tell them you'd be willing to consult if they need help rearranging the schedule for the department...but it'll cost plenty. You may end up in Sturgis, SD, but so what? Buy a Harley!

Pretty much the right answer now.

I was thinking about this further, and was reminded of something my wife's sister said. She just finished her Masters, in special education, and just took a job in the Seattle area. One of her key factors in which school to go to was the reputation of the principal, and how that person will be to work for.

The point being, even if this situation was to be rectified in the short term, you're probably in a bad place long term with the TAP possibly becoming principal. It's tough to give up the program that you built, but just look at it as a major accomplishment, and find another school to do it at all over again. Might be invigorating given some of the crap you mentioned went on in your life over the last couple of years.

Good luck Bob.

You commited the cardinal sin of negotiating -- you asked for exactly what you wanted on the first round of negotiations... now there is nowhere to go but down.

If I were you, I'd be the best damn freshman science teacher that I could be, get the young ones excited about science and learning, you might be doing them much more of a service than just getting them higher scores on an AP test.

Exactly. This isn’t rocket science. Actually it is, isn’t it? Seriously though, it is just HS science. Let’s put things in perspective. I assume one of the reasons you took off last year was to take a shot at going pro. If that is the case then let’s not act like teaching AP is the be all and end all.

You know as well as I that a different school will have a different set of inbred teachers. It is the same all over. The problems will just be different is all. Same story, different details, different location.

You taught 6 years so far and took a year off? (Not criticizing that - obviously you needed to do that). Now OOT wants you to quit here and look for a job elsewhere? Hey, do what you want. There is a good chance that I am the oddball here.

I think good teachers are a rare commodity. Just be a good teacher. If you decide you want to work elsewhere because the staff are idiots that is one thing. But, to leave because you can’t teach what you want - well, if you find Shangri-La, let me know.

Best wishes to you.

RJT
