Taking a break from painting, watching women's softball with my dad. He says when he was in the Marines there was a guy who could throw a softball, underhanded, 90 MPH. I say BS. Thoughts?

It could be true. There was someone who had a try-out with a cricket team who bowled underarm (don't worry about cricket, it's a UK game), and was apparently very quick. Some bowlers can bowl at 90mph so I suspect he was a little quicker.

If it's not 90, it's very close. I remember being blown away while watching a Class A game after we finished our Class C tournament. I could hit Class C pitching, but I wouldn't even be able to get the bat off my shoulder in an A game.

[/ QUOTE ] I had a book when I was maybe 10 years old about the greatest sports stories. One of the stories was about a softball pitcher named "The King" who could throw something like 110mph underhanded. During a celebrity game he came in and struck out three of the best major leaguers in history, in order (Willie Mays is the only one I recall). My money is with your old man here. Edit: The story was called "The King and His Court". The link states that he was clocked at 104mph. |

I'm wondering if we are talking about "equivalent" to a MLB fastball. The best female pitcher in the world throws 71, but some marine is chucking the rock at 90+ with no coaching, no training, and not much experience? Seems BS to me, but stranger things have happened...

I used to watch Eddie Feigner on the Wide World of Sports and similar shows when I was a kid. He'd play with just a few fielders because not many opponents could make contact. I suspected there was a little bit of Globetrotterism to the spectacle, but the guy threw really hard.
