Default 40/80 Reign in Blood

8-handed 40/80. UTG raises. He is an okay but overly passive player (pretty common in live games). For example, he regularly open-limps on the button. His range here is probably fairly narrow. UTG+1 calls. He can play well when he wants to, but often goofs around, especially preflop. A few times per session I will usually see him coldcall with something like 52s. I three-bet next to act with A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]. The big blind, UTG and UTG+1 call.

The big blind is the only guy at the table with whom I've never played before. I've been in the game for a little over an hour and he hasn't been involved in any interesting hands and seems to be playing moderately tight (although could just be card dead; you can't conclude that much from ~40 hands). He seems comfortable at the table and I get the vibe that he may actually understand this game.

The flop is J[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]7[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]3[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]. It's checked to me and I bet. BB raises and everyone calls.

The turn is 5[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]. BB bets and only I call.

The river is 2[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]. BB bets and I raise.

Why did you call the turn? I guess it works well if you think you have 6 clean outs and are going to represent [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]'s. Having gotten to the river which I doubt I would have, but don't mind the hand, I like the raise.

I would fold the turn. I'm ok with the river play. This guy checkraised the flop to blow out the field which means he is unlikely to have a spade in his hand. However you dont have much of a read. There are many players that will never/bet fold this river, then there are others where bet/folding is their standard play with many hands. I wish you had more of a read to make this play, so I would fold the river once you got there, but I really think you should fold the turn.

I think there's a chance that raising the turn/betting the river is a better line unless you think there's a big chance he's got a set (i.e. he wouldn't raise the flop with somethng like 88-TT). But I don't necessarily think your line is bad, as it definitely has merit.

At first I really liked this hand but i thought of something that thwarts your plan. That is, if he has a Jx no spade type hand and a spade hits on the river, he is type of guy to go into check call mode and not bet fold.

...something to consider

I think it's best to fold the turn here, and wait for a better spot. I agree with previous poster, that you don't have much of a read on him, so you don't know if he'll c/c, or fold, or anything. Wait for a better spot to lay the wood to him.

i think you should have checked behind on the flop and folded the turn. i have no idea what you were doing on the turn here. i think your bluffraise on the river is interesting but when he bets he probably has a PP with a spade that will call a raise. i doubt hes going to bet fold QQ and if he has KK-AA its more likely he has a spade than normal since you dont.

I would probably fold the turn. Either he hit a flush or has something like jacks (possibly AJ or KJ screwing up your outs, or jacks and a spade). I don't like the river raise since I doubt he is betting w/o planning to call a raise, esp. if he's been playing moderately tight. He prob has nut or second nut flush when he bets the end, most people would check w/o flush of some sort or weaker flush. I just don't think he's bet-folding enough to warrant the bluff raise.

Why are we putting him on big pairs? He called preflop from the big blind and then check-raised this flop which looks to me much more like something like J[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]Q[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img].

I agree. I think it's more believable that he'd have a flush playing this this line. The other way the river raise looks a bit odd. It could induce a call just out of curiousity. Especially if he's known to semi bluff a turned flush draw.
