[ QUOTE ]

I thought that though the play by AJP was clean, it was completely unnecessary. Barrett wasn't 'blocking' the plate. He was merely in position to block the plate if the ball came home in time.

[/ QUOTE ]

Raise,
AJP has no idea when the ball will arrive, therefore, he has to assume that it will get there in time. And Barrett may not have been completely blocking the plate, but it would still be dangerous for AJP to slide and try to reach his left arm in to touch the plate.
What if he goes to touch the plate with his left arm and Barrett scoots his left leg over? If this happens and AJP hits his left arm on Barretts shin-guarded left leg, it would not be good.

Why risk an arm injury when you can just knock the bitchboy back 5 feet with a good shoulder check?

Seriously. Technically you are right in saying that it was probably not "necessary" for AJ to knock him over, but given the circumstances, this is the play that you would see happen at least 95 times out of 100, regardless of who the runner is.

Jim, I'm a Yanks fan but it's pretty lame coming in here as a Cards fan and posting that crap about the Cubs being 10 back.

[/ QUOTE ]

Hint: He was OBVIOUSLY talking about the suspension length. It's funny you're so paranoid though.

He probably will get at least 8 or 10 games. Considering the going rate for throwing at a batter intentionally is 4. I think a point-blank forearm to the neck is a lot worse than a 90mph fastball to the shoulder.

[/ QUOTE ]

This statement shows a total ignorance of baseball.

Pitchers always get suspensions 2-5x longer because they appear in less games.

For suspension purposes, the following rough estimates apply.
1 position player game = 2-3 RP games = 5 SP games

[/ QUOTE ]

Noodleman,
He got 10 games. Seems like baseball agrees that a point-blank forearm to the jaw is somehow worse than a baseball thrown at a shoulder from 60 feet, 6 inches.

Speaking of this punch. Does anyone here consider this a "sucker punch"? I've heard lots of Sox fans and Sox announcers describing Barret's punch as a sucker punch. In my mind there is NO WAY this is a sucker punch. A sucker punch would be if the guy wasn't looking or you snuck up and punched someone that couldn't see you, these guys were standing nose to nose, is Barret supposed to warn him "I'm gonna punch you now" for it not to be a sucker punch? Sox fans suck. I'm not saying Barret was right or wrong to hit him, I'm just saying no way was that a sucker punch.

namknils,
A sucker punch is when you you throw a punch for no reason, with no warning, ie at least getting in the guys face and saying something. It was a cheap shot. That made very little sense. The ball hit AJ (I say AJ because I don't want to try and spell Pyrsynski) in the back. It was cleaner than half of the running over the catchers you see during the season.

The thing that gets my goat about these suspentions, both the Springer abombination and this one is that these guys can appeal and get their suspentions reduced. I think one time when some jackass that clearly does something wrong and appeals they should get more games added on.

Barrett grappled AJ right before he hit him so he'd have no chance to defend himself / block the punch.

Definite sucker punch.
