Seriously, it was a poorly thought out shot that affected my suspension of disbelief. The funny thing is picturing what they had to do to that windshield to get it in that condition for the shot where it is supposedly broken with a piece of plastic that is designed to reduce impacts.

He might as well have punched the helmet through the hood.

Having said that, while noticeable, it's an annoying blip while watching the show, an unfortunate defect in a good episode.

Since nobody else brought it up:

Joey G (the actor who played Vito) was on the Stern show Monday. He said the scene they shot was much, much more brutal than what made the final cut. He specifically mentioned that Phil had a line, where he instructs the goons to "Pull down his CS'ing, MF'ing pants."

I'm guessing that led up to the pool cue insertion.

I heard Joey G say (ESPN Radio, I think) that they filmed a scene where Vito was killed off by throwing him out of a moving car into traffic or something. Apparently, they filmed Vito being killed off several different ways.

i remember hearing phil say that he did 20 years in prison when johnny sac took the deal instead of standing trial. earlier, tony mentioned that "you get a pass" for gay activity in jail. it is possible that phil is still dealing with issues related to his prolonged stay in prison.

i hadn't thought about this before, but it makes sense. phil also seems to be uber-catholic, which = guilt.

what does this mean for the apparent feud on the horizon between the NY and NJ families? it could be just another character twist thrown in by chase, not much to do w/ what happens next...

After seeing the scene with Phil lying awake in bed, I also thought 'hmmm does he got a touch of the gay'.

It would explain his rabid obession with getting rid of Vito. And take into account his prison term comment and how disgusted he was at Johnny for showing a soft side at the wedding. Maybe Phil is masking some of his own insecurities.

HBO generally does this every holiday weekend with their premeiere series - they skip and present the finale the next week.
