Default not looking at the camera?

What's up with the new technique in commercials to have the people speaking look off camera? I remember first seeing it in a commercial for an online brokerage with that guy from Law & Order, but now the technique is all over the place. What gives?

knowing admen, they likely have done studies that show that people are more interested in eavesdropping on what someone says to someone else, than to pay attention to a pitchman on tv.
