I agree that they were pretty much just mediocre cash grabs, but I think they did a good job in dealing with a lot of key issues left behind by the first. One being that after realizing the artificial and oppressive nature of the world we perceive, there’s really nothing much left in it’s place to fill the void, and your old negative emotions just transgress into sheer suicidal despair.
