No. If all they do is go to a chatroom, say that they're a 14 year old boy looking for sex, and the guy shows up, it's fine. If they keep IMing some guy, he says no, they repeatedly call his house, he still says no, they start sending tons of mail, and he finally relents and agrees to meet up, that's entrapment.

However, I don't think having sex with someone of the opposite sex who is past puberty is perverted. It may be illegal in America, but in other cultures it is normal.

If it was not illegal and consensual, I am sure most men would have sex with a beautiful fourteen year old if she was mentally stable (not that there are girls like this in America).

Also, I would love to log into the private computers of the Dateline crew and police officers involved in these situations. I am betting we would find some interesting things that they would be very embarrased about.

Yikes. Are you serious? The most mentally stable 14 year old you could find would still be a 14 year old girl.

How mature do you think the most level headed 14 year old could be?

The sad thing is that I have interviewed a ton of these pervs and I've heard almost every justification you could dream of. The statutory guys all try and pull the same crap talking about how mature the child was and how the act was consensual.

I assure you that any 14 year old who is having "consensual" sex with an adult is harbouring some pretty heavy issues. In 9 out of 10 of these cases we will discover a history of sexual abuse from her childhood - whether it be a family member or the child herself who makes the disclosure.

16 is still a stretch although in the US you no longer need to concern yourself with a statutory rape charge.

Here in Canada the age of consent is 14 which is unbelievable. The are talking about changing this to 16 but it shocks me that it is even a point for debate.

I had a case involving a 14 year old who, while living with her mother, was having sex with the tenant who resided in their basement apartment. I interviewed the 14 year old who was adamant that the "relationship" was consensual. We were unable to do anything about this - we could not even tell her mother what was going on nor could I interview the tenant - because disclosing this would have been a violation of the 14 year old's rights.

Sickening.

For sure, I have never met a North American ready for sex at 14 or even 16. Yet there are 10 and 11 year olds engaging in sexual behaviour these days, so things are quite upside down.

Teenage marriage is very common in developing countries and there are several coutries where 12 is the legal age for marriage! So I think this issue is a relative one.

What ticks me off is Dateline and this whole set up routine. Why don't they go after the dangerous child molestors who go after prebuscent children? If someone were masquerading like a 9 year old, I would be happy to see a pervert who approaches them get crushed. But I have not seen this yet.

Also note how most of the men being caught are homosexuals too. Does Dateline go around condemning homosexuality? They have programs featuring this lifestyle on their network, yet many people find homosexuality to be perverted. So having sex with a teenager is hideous, but homosexuality is cool? I don't think it is right to use the sexual weaknesesses of people for entertainment.
