I don't understand why this even deserves a post. This entire forum is built on people teaching others how to play. Teaching strangers how to play no less. Helping out a guy in real life is much less of an offense than giving strategy advice on a public forum.

Reminds me of the time a friend asked me to recommend a poker book. I recommended Phil Helmuth's book and then invited him to our weekly home game.

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] i think your analogy doesn't work here. if i give a smoker info about how smoking kills you, does this mean he won't smoke? [/ QUOTE ] FWIW, I wasnt going for any anology. Ive just been randomly asking people that question recently. Also... you never confirmed in that other thread: marathon in November?? [/ QUOTE ] i am not sure about the marathon in november. i am running now and getting fitter, but i have a long way to go. i'll keep you posted. as far as snakes, i hate [censored] snakes. [/ QUOTE ] You know what freaks me out? Quicksand, that [censored] is scary. |

[ QUOTE ] This is good for you. If he decides to get better at poker you will be able to profit from his improvement. [/ QUOTE ] I'm not sure how i will profit, unless you mean that he will play in the bigger games again where i still have an edge over him. whatever. i hope he improves and learns to play well. he is a good guy. [/ QUOTE ] Actually in a perfect world he improves, because good enough to slightly beat the game, but never becomes good enough to master the game, thus always leaving a significant edge for Bob. I can't count how many people have read SSHE and still play like crap.. its not a magic bullet to automatically beating the games. I've given away 5 copies of GSIH, and three SSHE's so far. Sometimes you can just tell when someone would really appreciate it, they are the ones who deserve gifts like this the most. Sounds like Bob's choice was perfect. I just want to say that I still think it's weird that Bob gave some random stranger a book. Not because I don't like helping people learn poker, I do that all the time both on this forum and on AIM, but because I think it's weird to give people you don't know gifts.

[ QUOTE ] It's good for the karma. It's bad for the game. [/ QUOTE ] I have no qualms helping good people, regardless of if it's -EV. My sense of self worth is worth more than the game of poker. [/ QUOTE ] Well put. And good of you to help out a good/nice guy. |
