A lot of the rules of basketball require referees.

Games to five seem a little short. I can see playing to seven to make sure everyone gets to play, but five is too short. I prefer to play to at least 13.

Defense should never be responsible for calling fouls, but if they do, they've got to allow for some continuation.

My opinions on some of the other issues brought up in this thread:

-All buckets count as one. Most playgrounds (I've never been to any famous ones, though) don't even have three-point lines. And as someone said, it leads to a lot of arguments.

-I always play win by two. My favorite way to play one-on-one, actually, is game to two, win by two (alternating possession, of course).

-Halfcourt game = make it, take it (winner's outs). Fullcourt game = alternating possession.

imitation,

"The fouls thing really pisses me off because when the game is at 4 all (don't have to win by 2 here) the fouls are very heavy in the paint."

Sounds like you need to join a country club with a nice indoor basketball court and sauna and stuff.

I mean guys basicaly just pull you down as soon as you touch the ball with in the 3 point line and look like driving or posting, it just spoils the game because street ball works much better when you have an agressive game played by people who generally dont fould because they are used to playing refereed games, ie a bit extra goes on but its generally still a good "game"

WTF is with you guys that only play by 1s? What's the fun in taking out the value of the 3-point shot?

[/ QUOTE ]

Most of the playgrounds I play on don't even have a 3-point line.

Make it take it effing retarded, noone actually plays that right?

One on one and make it take it with good players is hardly basketball.

In SW VA, play to 11 1s and 2s, call foul on O or D, win by 2, and anyone who suggests make it take is shot in the back of the head and promptly disposed of where the grass grows tall.

Cheers,
Cambraceres

Edit: Yes the game is shooter dominated if there are any

for some reason the rules of basketball went out the window when playing street ball. anyone have any idea why? i have a few racist theories.

[/ QUOTE ]

Daryn,

my main reasoning for it is because a lot of the players see the game as a test of their manhood. Therefore, the rules don't really apply, and you get crap like no blood no foul, or assholes undercutting you when you go up, etc.

yeah, don't get me wrong, I'm all about cutting out the ticky-tac BS fouls, but getting hammered in the lane is a bit overboard.

With good players, and no fouls, no one ever scores. It's easy to keep anyone from hitting shots with a well executed foul. Now if you are playing with kids or idiots then you could just look like you're tough by not calling ever.
