As others have said, he clearly wants a check or cheaper bet from hero. But a lot depends on how much of a calling station he is on the river with weak As or middle pair (or QQ here) which hero didn't specify despite saying he was "live". And all the advice here advocating a push really runs the risk of losing all action especially after that comment by the old guy. So it goes back to the rule of bet how much you think he would call, which can only be determined from his previous river calls, although as a default I would bet 1/3-1/2. I would only push here against players whom I thought held a stronger hand or would interpret that as a desparation move by QQ and be more likely to call with a weak A.

I feel like this line means "I'll call your push, but I really don't want to have to," which makes it really dumb, because in his head, he's trying to discourage you from bluffing the missed flush and putting him to a big decision, which is not something he should do if he plans on calling.

I would push and then act however he might think you would act if you were bluffing. What I mean by that is somehow to give him a reason to doubt you, and he will.

i've never played a live no limit game higher than 500 buy in. but that line says to me "i do not want to call your push with my marginal hand."

push.

[/ QUOTE ]

So he doesn't want to call your push with a marginal hand but hero should push? What do you expect to get called by if that's your read? If you think his hand is marginal, shouldn't you advocate a medium-sized bet for value? Or by marginal do you mean higher set on a flush board and you're pushing as a bluff?

[/ QUOTE ]

bet the pot or a little more than the pot

Sounds like you do need to say that and check the nuts. If you have the nerve, and the guile to pull that move on a good player, hats off to you. You deserve to win a big pot.
