Default \"careful, don\'t go broke now\"

bellagio 10-20. old guy directly to hero's right is making the game very live. he had like a 10k stack, lost all but 2k of it, but now has gotten back to about 10k, all within the past hour. he opens to 100 from ep, hero makes it 300 with JJ, hu to the flop which comes AJ3, all clubs. old guy checks, hero bets 500, old guy calls. turn is an os K, check, bet 1200, call. river an os 5, check, hero starts counting down his chips and bills, which total around 5k (old guy covers), when the old guy suddenly says, "careful, don't go broke now."

hero does what?

push?

whats his range here? If he's making the game live wouldn't he 3bet preflop with AA/KK? flush? unless hes live enough to stick in with SC or something...

I'd push, especially after that comment.

(assuming push is about the size of pot)

Normally I bet 1/2 pot here. With that comment I'd bet more.

i've never played a live no limit game higher than 500 buy in. but that line says to me "i do not want to call your push with my marginal hand."

He probably has some 2 pair type hand, maybe AK with the king of suit and really doesnt want to fold. There is 4k in there right? Just make a normal bet of 2-3k, you dont want to lose him and blow him off 2 pair which he may fold to an allin.

Seems way too obvious of a tell for a game that high. Never played that high live but usually when people give away OBVIOUS tells like that means the exact opposite. But if you were counting chips looking like you were going to raise and he had a strong hand and wanted you to do that then he would really have no motivation to say anything to induce the raise therefore I might have to second guess myself.

So he doesn't want to call your push with a marginal hand but hero should push? What do you expect to get called by if that's your read? If you think his hand is marginal, shouldn't you advocate a medium-sized bet for value? Or by marginal do you mean higher set on a flush board and you're pushing as a bluff?
