I think it's interesting that the anti-splitters seem to be saying that it would take too much away from OOT, while the pro-splitters claim that their stuff gets buried too fast/never gets going.
They can't both be right, can they? One problem with a split is that people may specifically want to discuss an A&E topic with the people they know from OOT. The solution, as Mat said, is to allow AandE in either. But then you have the annoyance of dupe threads you're sure to have on stuff like Lost. Personally I know I'd be reading both threads, and it would suck. |

If A&E split off, it would make for an interesting forum. But A&E is one of the things that keeps OOT readable. It's not the number of posts you would lose so much as the tone. I like a fart joke as well as most, but still I have my limits and OOT sometimes crosses them. But that's fine because I can just ignore them and still find interesting stuff to click on -- which is highly A&E, for me. But if A&E were taken out, the sophmoric tone of OOT would probably get to be a real drag in short order. OOT would lose a lot of its balance, and have too little breaks in the idiocy. I doubt I would spend as much time in it, and would probably spend less time at 2+2 in general. [/ QUOTE ] This is what I tried to say before (but failed). Good post. |

db,
"Put these premises together, and you get, at worse, the same (but more likely better) 2+2 experience for you, a better experience for other 2+2ers not currently using OOT, and more volume on the given subjects (so better bottom-line for 2+2)." No. What you get is most likely higher quality A&E discussion for the people who are interested in specifically interested in coming to 2+2 for A&E discussion. I do not dispute at all that A&E discussion in a dedicated subforum may well be higher quality than here. This likely results in a better experience for a subset of OOT users, a better experience for some current non-OOT users, and likely less total bottom-line volume for 2+2. I've explained why this is in prior posts. "I think if you lose the A&E, you lose a big part of what makes the rest of OOT bearable." - Blarg "If OOT was just posts like that, I would not frequent it." - El D "I do know that if A&E was taken out of OOT I don't know how much I would post here anymore" - tdarko That was just from scrolling up through a handful few posts. PDPG and Aloysius are among the others in this thread who have made similar comments. I really don't think you (and others supporting your position) understand how easy it is to completely kill off a forum. That's definitely not a certainty, but there's absolutely a real possibility that OOT completely dies off if too much is split off. And once that is done, the subforums will quite possibly die off as well. |

And regarding dupe threads, so what? You already got too much time on your hands or you wouldn't be spending so much time here already. |

Repent now. |

Call me stupid but wouldn't Dom's trip reports be enough to break off OOT with? It could actualy be a sub heading under Arts and Entertainment.
[ QUOTE ] only thing that will be left is Dom's trip reports and dudes asking how to approach women [/ QUOTE ] |

El D,
to be fair, i'm almost positive you're quoting tdarko out of context, or at least implying something he didn't imply |

So in other words, the A&E crowd needs to be forced to stick around in OOT for the sole benefit of the fart/sex/etc crowd, but screw the A&E crowd's own needs? [/ QUOTE ] It's not clear that the A&E crowd will benefit long term if OOT dies off. Without OOT to fuel it, it may be that you get a smaller crowd of more dedicated posters posting better comments but less frequently, and you get less traffic. It's obviously not proven (nor provable) that removing A&E kills OOT, but it seems like a lot of the posters here who I (and I suspect just about everybody else, too) enjoy reading most are basically saying that they don't really think OOT would be much fun without this stuff. And I'm inclined to agree. From a non-business angle (2+2's success doesn't really interest me very much, though clearly it's going to be a driving force in deciding what gets done), OOT is a pretty interesting community. This place would be a lot drier without it, and it would be a shame to see it go. I tend to think that dispersing heavy chunks of the content that the more thoughtful posters seem to gravitate to is a step in that direction. |
