like mat said, a lot of people don't look because of volume too. if 1/20 threads are about a topic in which they hold interest, it's not likely they're going to bother looking at it. especially if they keep the forum defaults and have like 30 topics on the front page.

Astro,
How about you have the people who want this to happen come her and post about it so everyone can leave you alone. |

[ QUOTE ] sports [/ QUOTE ] i think sports and politics were absolutely necessary splits. [/ QUOTE ] For all practical purposes, there was no (O)OT until Politics got split out. |

[/ QUOTE ] i certainly don't mind, i want to do whatever i can to make sure oot's side is presented. as far as getting "the other" people in here, they're not all in one place. posting a poll in every strat forum and asking if they would visit an a&e forum would probably be as good as it gets, since most people don't read forum suggestions (including me). |

[ QUOTE ]
What I don't like about a split is the inevitable corollary -- A&E discussions would be banned in OOT. I don't think OOT in spirit is really about specific topics, but it's treated like that. So when you say "No A&E talk in OOT", "No Science or Philosophy in OOT", "No P*ker", "No Sports" -- To me that's just stupid. It's possible to know which forum is which and choose OOT for a thread. I understand why you don't want the threads clogging the forum but a hard and fast rule is autistic. That's my 2 cents, I know most people and most moderators disagree. [/ QUOTE ] This is a reasonable post. |

[ QUOTE ] Okay, I just want to make a point, again. I used to post the most film reviews here (I think 26-28 in January) I got tired of them getting buried, so just cut back: what was the point? Today, I posted one about Kingpin. It had some responses, and then had none for nearly 6 hours. I bumped it, and it got a lot more responses. IT GOT BURIED REALLY QUICKLY. You could point out that I posted it at a god-awful time. But I can tell you from experience, if you post them at a busy time, THEY GET IMMEDIATELY BURIED, UNLESS IT'S A MOVIE LOTS OF PEOPLE HAVE SEEN. I hang around OOT a lot, and I'm tired to trying to do entertainment stuff, just to see it washed away. I'm tired of hearing whines about 'I don't come here to read film reviews' or suchlike. Does anyone see my point here? Second point: We're debating about people who don't come into OOT - these are by definition completely unrepresented here. Don't make tons of assumptions. It's best THEY get asked about this too, somehow. [/ QUOTE ] Do you have any better examples, because you'll notice that most of the replies in your Kingpin review noted that this wasn't one of your better reviews... In fact, it was of much lesser quality that most posters are used to from you. This, of course, supports my point that lower-quality content is buried quickly (as it should be). So how about some examples of the good reviews that you've done that have stayed on the front page for a while? [/ QUOTE ] I think I'm saying it's not the quality of the review that keeps a review at the front, it's the popularity/number of posters who've seen the film that does that. And possibly if there's a few posters in at the same time who develop a head-to-head about it too. I don't think a review (good or poor quality) has any breathing space at all in OOT, be it music, films, TV, books. And this deters people doing them. and it's not just reviews, it's discussion, it's arguing plot points, it's arguing tracks or whatever. all of these things get swept away super fast in OOT. |
