looks like a good deal for both, though the yanks get some nice pitching upside and a guy that is probably better than Wright for the 5 slot.
Tigers get some high power obp that they really need in the lineup, monroe is a fine 4th of/dh guy, |

A better thread title would be "Yankees dump Sheffield on Tigers". I know that the Tigers wanted to trade pitching for hitting, but given the number of teams that need pitching, surely they could have done better than a 38-year-old with a bad attitude? [/ QUOTE ] From what I understand, Sheffield is a "team" guy and a "winner". I think he left his "bad attitude" in Milwaukee. |

Sanchez was added to their m40 man roster yet the other two were sent down to minors..is this just to get a look during spring training or do they think he can start next year? [/ QUOTE ] He needs to be on the 40-man roster when they have the rule 5 draft or he could be picked by another team. Sanchez looks like a good, not great, prospect. Re: the other two, it's very rare that a pitcher who is a reliever in Class A makes good in the majors. Personlly, I think the Tigers got the better end of this deal. I wonder if the Yanks could get more for Sheff if they were just patient? Does this remind anyone of the Thome deal from a year ago? Old superstar coming off of an injury goes to AL champ that has most of their roster intact? |

dombrowski is apparently taking a page out of kenny williams' playbook from last offseason. (this isn't a compliment, for those not familiar with my opinion of kenny)
i do agree this is the type of move detroit should be looking to make this offseason, but they overpaid. |

rwperu,
The Yankees didn't really want Sheffield back IIRC. They took this option for the sole intent of trading him. So basically a hot dog with a couple packets of mustard would have been better than what the yankees were gonna get otherwise. |

Also, to limit Drew's injury risk, they could DH him once a week or whatever. I'm sure that could help. [/ QUOTE ] Or he could pitch and rest every 4 days. |

Sheffield was going somewhere; as a Yankee fan, if there's one thing we need it's certainly good young pitching. The "ace" of the staff is 93 years old, just had back surgery, and had an ERA of 5 last year, the second ace will be 38 next year, the closer will be 37, and the winningest pitcher last year likely won't have a long career as he doesn't strike anyone out. If even just one of the three kids becomes something, it's +EV.
Sheffield is a hard play to like. He's just such a selfish jerk. I'm glad he's going somewhere where they'll treat him like a man. |

Sheffield was going somewhere; [/ QUOTE ] This move is a wet dream for the yankees and exactly why they picked up his option. Even if none of these guys develop it was a good gamble. Moreover, they kept the out-going player happy in that he gets the 3 year deal he craved. The key is exactly that quoted above, "Sheffield was going somewhere." |
