Before I can share my thoughts about free will I'll need to explain that I believe there are two possible options for the workings of the universe.
Either there is a totally deterministic universe in which everything is fixed. We feel we travel though this fixed set on the axis of time making all kinds of decisions, but all those things and even our thoughts now are all fixed. For example one could predict the ending position of the balls on a pool pable after the first ball was shot because after the first hit (in this case there is a time span) all would be going according to fixed rules and is repeatable. This would be an example where one would look at the influences in time, but it could be anything in a deterimistic universe. Then there is an underterminisic universe where there is some pure randomness. If the randomness wouldn't be pure it would be governed by something, which implies this universe is deterministic. In either of these universes there is no place for free will if this will can lead to events or actions that change the universe. In a deterministic universe everything is fixed by definition so there is no changing the universe and therefore none of this free will. The other universe, that has pure randomness, cannot allow free will because free will has to undo the randomness. If the randomness can be influenced or undone it cannot be pure anymore and the free will leads (ironically) to determinism. It feels hard to accept, but I believe even writing this is determined and my free will is no more then an illusion. Excuse my English for I'm not a native speaker. EDIT: Excuses, for I should have read more carefully because dr doctr said this a lot clearer on page 5 |
