online MTTs dont have donks BTW. like if you play a 500+50, or a 200+20, chances are, all 1 or 5 thousand players are amungst the best players in the world.

This is not the case w/ 1500 or 2500 or 5k or even 10k$ events in the WSOP, b/c about 80% of the field is amateur at best.

Well, the big paying Sunday MTTs every week are full of dead money. And the two super sats tonight on Full Tilt and Stars will be donkalicous. And they will send provide about 100 players or so who are dead money in the main event an all - expenses paid lottery ticket to Vegas. Running well for an 11 hour stretch is a pre - requisite to winning an event like the Sunday Million.

But yes, the best MTT players in the world can be found on the interweb. The ME of the WCOOP will be a much tougher top to bottom field than the ME of the WSOP. And a lot of the best in the online world are underage to compete in Vegas at the moment.

What are we really talking about in this thread?

- Are large MTTs massively variance heavy? Yes.
- Does that variance increase in direct correalation to the amount that enter? Yes.
- Just because a 2600 runner tournament is higher variance than a 100 player one - does it make it a better achievment to come through the field FTW? No.
- Does winning one tournament make you a good poker player? No.
- Does winning a few tournaments even make you a good tournament player? Probably not.

Look at Hellmuth's record though. He is not a lucky donk. He has been consistently profitable in MTTs his entire career. And even through the hunge shifts of the last five years where the fields are getting bigger; the players at the top end are getting better (influx of the likes of Darrell Dicken, Gavin Griffen, Rizen, Justin Bonamo, Gobbo etc. going live); and the variance significantly greater - he still is a big winner over a decent sample.

There will be inevitably a lot of hate for a player like Hellmuth on this forum - particularly when that player has a very high opinion of himself and likes to let everyone know about it. Aba doesn't play tournaments. This site is full of players battling to increase their bankroll and move up cash levels. They play the big Sunday events with bingo like structures and are filled with hate when some terrible randomer hits a run of insane cards and cashes for huge sums. That colors the general opinions people have. lol donkaments, etc.

At this point, a solid arguement can be made that Hellmuth has the best NLHE MTT record of any player to date. The big live event circuit will get tougher over the next few years though. If he continues to own to this extent at that level over the next few years the scope for arguing against that assertion will be significantly diminished.

Yes that was just one more reason I mentioned Jc Tran. He won the WCOOP ME.

anyone read the USA Today article on Friday about Hellmuth?

Chan and Doyle made some interesting comments on Phil

Here's the article:

from the article: "Brunson said he would take Hellmuth against anybody in a tournament"

Every young player who thinks he knows everything about MTTs might want to consider that.

yeah, I am sure doyle is being literal and is terrified of being in a tourney with Phil. Doyle has 10 bracelets over a lot less starts than Hellmuth does.
