I personally agree with you about Linda Perry ("What's Going On" makes me want to shoot things) but:

It's supposed to be the BEST female songwriters, not the MOST SUCCESSFUL or POPULAR.

Just reads as if you're saying they are mutually exclusive (best / most popular)...

Either way, Linda Perry's had far less hits (as a writer) than either Carole King, Carol Bayer Sager, Dolly Parton, or many other women listed in this thread.

The fallacy of recency truly sucks, ya know?

And, MicroBob, sorry, but you're wrong. The song is not "What's Going On". You're confusing a lyric with the song title. The song is "What's Up?", like I said in the first place.

Just did a quick check of I'm With Stupid and Lost In Space (both masterpieces IMO). I'd say about 80% of the songs are written entirely by Aimee Mann (words and music). Winnah!

Tracy Chapman (who by the way puts on an amazing live show) and Joni Mitchell have already been mentioned and I love both.

Not mentioned yet:
Victoria Williams
Juliana Hatfield
Kim Deal
Kirstin Hersh
