This came to mind for me. She doesn't perform her songs (I don't think) and yet she has a ton of hits.

I'm not really too conscious of female songwriters that I really like. Which is a bit odd, because I generally love female vocalists.

Joni Mitchell usually shows up near the top of this list. Carly Simon certainly deserves to be on the list somewhere.
