I had no idea they even made them anymore until I wandered into a coin dealer one day

[/ QUOTE ]

yikes, me either. Really, they should simply make the half dollar size the new $5 coin

[/ QUOTE ]

The half dollar coin is too big.

A $5 coin that was the weight and size of the £1 coin (slightly smaller diameter than a quarter but almost twice as thick), or the old 5 guilder coin would be much better. Very easy to identify from a handful of coins in your hand.

But as The Metetron and others have said, what we really need to do is ditch the penny.

For those who've never seen it (it stopped circulating in 1978), here's the "big" dollar:

For some people, that's the way the dollar coin should be, as it goes up in size from the quarter to the half to the whole:

In contrast, the current dollar is a lot smaller than the half:

I disagree. The Eisenhower dollar is way too big. I can easily put 10-20 presidential dollars in my pocket. 20 Eisenhower dollars is just way too big to carry.

(As an aside, it's a lot easier to carry around 20 dollar coins than 20 dollar bills. A lot easier to count them out (no digging out the wallet/money clip), and you don't have to wait for change all the time. It's really useful if you're going to buy a lot of small items (e.g., from street vendors).

As a last picture, I'll show the last 3 big dollars: the Morgan, the Peace, and the Eisenhower:

Man, that new dollar is stupidly similar to a quarter. Hell, our bills all look the same. Why should coins be any different?

Here's a radical idea. If the mint wants people to use $1 coins, why not take the $1 bills out of circulation?

I think we should get rid of coins altogether, and use bills for everything down to the penny

the metro north ticket vending machines give change in sacagaweas. (i have no idea how to spell her name) I rarely pay in cash for my train tickets, but when i do I hate the dollar coins. they are cumbersome and heavy in my pocket if I get more than two or three.

Why do they keep making them quarter size? Make them bigger, make them an octagon, punch a hole in the middle, whatever... just make it so I don't think it's a quarter everytime.

We Americans are a lazy bunch. We don't want to carry the extra weight. There would be rioting in the streets and attempted coups if this were to happen.

If America is so averse to carrying coins, why didn't we get rid of the penny long ago?
