He got suspended the last year for having a little too much fun with an 8th grader

Was she hot?

Anyway, yeah I knew about that. I'm pretty sure that dropped him a few spots in the draft which allowed the Mets to pick him up at #12.

I don't really know what she looked like.
It was a Christian school, so it was a big scandal/story.
It was a main reason why the Devil Rays didn't draft him.

Yeah, well I'm really glad they didn't draft him.

That .524 OBP is sick. I can't wait till he takes the leadoff spot away from Reyes next year. Of course Randolph will screw that one up too.

He doesn't project to have a very good OBP, though you can't do worse than Reyes.

Exactly. Where did you see his projected OBP? The guy was about .400 in AA last year, .350 in spring training this year.

I meant more that he won't walk too much, opposed to he won't have a high OBP.

BP projects him to be a .260/.320 for the next 4 years with decent power, though good power for a CF.

Milledge is good, but a lot of his OBP comes from high batting averages by simply making contact and beating out the throw. That won't work against big league infielders, not to mention that he's going to have to face more nasty curveballs and things that will miss bats.

In Willie's defense, he has to trot out Endy Chavez in CF while Beltran is out. Oh yeah...Milledge is hitting .404/.524/.625 at AAA...

[/ QUOTE ]

An argument could be made that the problem with bringing Milledge up right now is that there is potential to "set him back a bit".

I dunno though. That kid can play, he proved it in Spring Training and he continues to prove it in Norfolk. If Beltran lands on the DL with his vagina injurty the Mets should really consider giving this kid some playing time in Queens.

[/ QUOTE ]

Is there any evidence that position players can be negatively affected by a few MLB ABs slightly before they are ready? I could see this with pitchers, but I don't think this is a good reason to hold a hitter back.

Two words: Corey Patterson.

Alternatively: Kevin Maas

kevin maas was 25 when he got is first ML ab, i dont think that was the problem with him.

cosidering pattersons great defense in CF, he was a good MLB player in 2003/2004 at the ages of 23 and 24, certainly better than anything else the cubs could have put out those two years (AFAIK).

he was awful last year, but i dont think that has anything to do with playing 2002 in chicago.
