Great question, I was just thinking about that one the other day. I kind of think of them like this:

Bad Beat: You get all your $$ in way ahead, and Villain sucks out

Cooler: You get all your $$ in with an awesome hand but you were a dead man walking and didn't even know it, ie: set over set, Quads over FH, ect...

I was thinking it was something like that.. cooler being when you were drawing dead - or just way behind - but given villain and your reads you played the hand correctly...
