A better analogy would be getting a scholarship and having the college close after the first year. You would not be entitled to compensation for the next three years.
I take all my quasi-legal advice from Judge Judy. She always makes the girl give the ring back. It is a gift in anticipation of marriage. There is no issue with who's fault it is. (but maybe that is California law and is different in other states)
