Dogs have a "protective instinct" for their owners that has, on occasion, resulted in life-saving actions. That is not intelligence or compassion.

I have never heard of a pig or dolphin saving a human life, but feel free to illuminate me. However, I'd be willing to bet that it has zero to do with intelligence or compassion.
