Good restaurants are _not_ hard to find in Vancouver.
Tojo's is definitely a good call for Japanese. It's an odd little place, though. The decor hasn't been updated since the 90s when it was popular, but the food is great.
Memphis Blues on Broadway for barbecue. Seriously great.
Simpatico on 4th is a Greek restaurant, but they've got great pizza.
Feenie's is the bistro next to Lumiere (one of the big name restaurants) It's pretty casual, not at all expensive, and they make a great burger.
Vij's (or Rangoli, the bistro next to it) for Indian.
Fritz's downtown for fries. Not a restaurant, though.
