Flying into Rome 5/17

I need to start doing my research. My girlfriend and I will be staying for 10 days, excluding overseas travel time. What are the sites I absolutely have to see in Italy? We were thinking the Riviera, Venice, Florence, Isla di Capri, and obv Rome but I don't think we can do all those justice given the time. World travelers give me advice!

I just returned from a week in Rome and Venice. Wonderful week.
We used a couple of guide books, one was a standard travel guide and the other was "An irreverent Guide to Rome" by Sylvie Hogg. She was more interesting to read and had a few helpful hints. bones
This was one of them that I would have missed.
Any guide book lists the major sights and offers suggestions for one, two , three day visits. maps are everywhere, just bring good walking shoes. You can walk the entire city easily.
We chose Venice over Florence as Florence was billed as focused on art....Rome and Venice had enough art to satisfy my needs. Of course this is coming from a guy who did the Louvre in less than a day. Once the Mona Lisa smiled at ME I was outta there. though that was in my youth when I had less an appreciation for art.
Venice was only 4 hours by train. I loved Venice. It is a totally unique city, physically unlike any other city, in a very dramatic way. It helps if you like water.....
Venice is also a walkable city, you will likely do more walking than you plan.....they didn't exactly grid the city out back in the day, but it is like a fun maze and every once in a while you will see an arrow pointing to San Marco, the escape route.
I'm not sure what I would have done with the extra few days you have. Munich is kind of out of the way unless you can fly out of there. I loved Munich when traveling in my youth. The Duetch Museum was incredible, a visit to Dachau will be a head slap you won't ever forget, and the beer halls are legendary. When I was in Europe in my youth we passed through Munchen twice.
Have a great trip. do report.

As ten days is your timetable, I’d limit my visit to Rome/Florence/Amalfi Coast-Capri areas. That in itself is stretching things, but do-able. If you try to get up to the Italian Riviera and Venice you are spreading yourself thin. Unless you want to see it all with the intent of returning another time and spending quality time in each place.

Let me know once you decide if you have any further specific questions, be happy to help if I can.

P.S. If you must do Venice that is cool, but then choose either Amalfi Coast or Riviera - no real need to do both.
