Transfering airline tickets to another person?

Does anyone have any recent experience with being able to transfer an unused (US) commercial airline ticket to someone else for their use (e.g. my parents)? The travel agent I purchased them from initially said that I can only have the tickets re-issued to the people whose names appear on the current tickets (with penalties, of course).

Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,
-David

Wing,

With most airlines "I can only have the tickets re-issued to the people whose names appear on the current tickets (with penalties, of course)" is the policy w/ pretty much no exceptions.

Yeah, I think you're screwed here. Airlines suck at customer service. I don't think this is a Federal Regulation, just a monopolistic mindset. No wonder their bankrupt.

Airlines are going bankrupt because they are not monopolies.

That's why I said "mindset". I used to work at the railroad and they can get away with it since they ARE monopolies.

Airlines are hugely price competitive. That is not monopolistic behavior. Also, airline margins are absolutely tiny.

I work at a bank. Does that make me an expert on cargo shipping?
