5/10 Flopped set. Very stupid mistake.

Playing in a 5/10 game 8 people seated at 10 person table.

I am UTG with 4 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]4 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]. I limp. UTG + 1 raises. Fold. Fold SB Fold. BB call. I call.

Flop is 2 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] A [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 4 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

BB checks. I check. Villain Raises. BB FOlds. I raise. Villian calls.

Turn is 6 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img].

I bet. He raises.

AND FOR SOME REASON I CALL. I HAVE VISIONS OF STRAIGHTS DANCING IN MY HEAD! With a preflop raise? How is that possible that I am thinking this? I know. I suck.

River is K [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img].

He bets. I CALL.

I suck...This is clearly a huge mistake correct? No way I should fear a straight or AA? Ugh...

This "fear" is probably keeping me from big profits I suppose. There was no logical explanation that he would have a straight. He had A [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]K [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] and I would have made a lot more money.

You can't achive a high win rate by always putting your opponents on the 1 hand that beats you. Grow a pair and reraise him somewhere.

Not a huge mistake. with his raise pre-flop, then check post-flop, he could very easily been slow playing AA, or have another high pair, such as KK or QQ and fear the A flop. I feel your biggest mistake was not re-raising after the turn to try and define his hand. AA would have re-raised right back, another high pair probably would have folded, and a AK, AQ or AJ would have called, and you would have had a much easier time putting him on a hand

Which kinds of brings up an interesting question: given that we're readless, do we fold to a turn cap, or call down for two more big bets?

Are you playing with a proper bankroll? Playing scared like this is usually a symptom of playing above a limit you are comfortable with.

3betting the turn and folding to a cap would just be silly. The pot is too big to fold by then, and there are very few hands that villan will have which beats us.

300x the big bet is the proper bankroll; @ 5/10 - $3000. This multiple ensures you are able to weather the volatility. $1K will go very quickly when you start running cold. Being underfunded leads to passive play, as was the case in this hand.

Okay, my standard play here is the call down, but I'm questioning it on further thought.

It's somewhat difficult given the fact that we have no reads, but tell me this: what hands raise PF then cap the turn?

53 isn't a raising hand, even for a maniac. 44 and 66 are also highly unlikely. Given a turn cap and PF raise, I'd put it at pretty long odds that we're up against an AA. Since it would be 2 bets to showdown, we're looking at 5:1 odds. Do you really think anything other than AA would be likely 1 in 6 times? I don't........
