Cameron Maybin, Welcome to the Big Leagues!!!
I'm surprised there hasn't been a thread about this yet, as I think this is every bit as big as the Upton call up.
[ QUOTE ] Tigers designate Monroe, promote top prospect Maybin Posted: Friday Aug 17, 2007 2:17 PM DETROIT (AP) -The Detroit Tigers designated slumping outfielder Craig Monroe for assignment Friday, a season after he helped them make a surprising run to the World Series. The Tigers promoted 20-year-old outfielder Cameron Maybin, one of the top prospects in the minors, from Double-A Erie. They also recalled infielder Ramon Santiago from Triple-A Toledo and optioned infielder Omar Infante to their top minor league team. Detroit made the moves before Friday night's game against New York at Yankee Stadium. The Tigers began the day with a half-game lead in the AL Central. The 30-year-old Monroe was hitting only .222 with 11 home runs and 55 RBIs in 99 games. The left fielder had been recently sidelined because of the flu. Monroe batted .255 with 28 homers and 92 RBIs last year, then tied a franchise record by hitting five home runs in the World Series. He also tied for second among AL outfielders with 12 assists. Monroe signed a one-year contract for $4,775,000 in the offseason, getting a raise from $2.8 million. Maybin was expected to be with the Tigers on Friday night. He started the season at Class A Lakeland, hitting .304 with 10 homers, 44 RBIs and 25 stolen bases, and moved up Erie. The Tigers purchased his contract after he hit .400 with four home runs and eight RBIs in six games at Double-A. Santiago batted .263 with three homers and 30 RBIs at Toledo. [/ QUOTE ] As the world's biggest CMo hater, I can honestly say I was giddy when I heard "Craig Monroe" and "Designated for Assignment" in the same sentence. How is this going to shake out? Is Maybin their fourth outfielder who will rarely see a start or will he be sorta platooning with Granderson in CF against lefties and in LF with Thames seeing more playing time at 1st against righties? Andy Pettitte takes the mound tonight for the Yanks, go ahead and put him out there! |
Re: Cameron Maybin, Welcome to the Big Leagues!!!
Brag: I recently (like three days ago) decided to start collecting baseball cards again. 33% of the cards I've purchased so far have been Cameron Maybin!

Isn't it very rare for someone to skip AAA?

Isn't it very rare for someone to skip AAA? [/ QUOTE ] It isn't THAT rare, but he is essentially skipping AA too, which is more unusual. |
Re: Cameron Maybin, Welcome to the Big Leagues!!!
pretty bizarre decision. a good week in AA doesn't really mean that much
hes a big prospect but hes not going to hit at all in the majors right now. he'll strike out like adam dunn except he wont draw walks or slug higher than .400 |

And even if he can't hit a lick, he's still a fantastic reserve outfielder to come off the bench with his plus plus speed and defense. Thirdly, have you seen Craig Monroe's stat line? Seriously, who were they supposed to replace monroe with, Timo Perez? btw, he's batting second, playing left field, wearing number 4 (first since higgy in a tiger's uni i believe, lol) |
Re: Cameron Maybin, Welcome to the Big Leagues!!!
welcome to the bigs Maybin. First AB gets K'ed by Pettite
|
Re: Cameron Maybin, Welcome to the Big Leagues!!!
Craig Monroe's not that bad. A good bench bat to have v lefties. Casey should be designated for assignment, not Monroe.

Re: Cameron Maybin, Welcome to the Big Leagues!!!
0 for 4 with 2 Ks which proves what I thought all along. He's no Justin Upton.

Re: Cameron Maybin, Welcome to the Big Leagues!!!

Re: Cameron Maybin, Welcome to the Big Leagues!!!
Wow, he got pwned today. Poor Kid. You gotta feel for him. Only 19 years old.

Vyse, The last thing Detroit needs filling up a roster spot is a situational outfielder for lh pitching. Who would he be hitting for? Granderson's really the only starter that has a significant split, and I can't imagine Leyland ever ph'ing for Granderson the way he brings in Casey as a defensive substitution for Thames in the 5th inning. Also, Monroe has a .554 OPS since the all star break. He's gotten every opportunity and has just been flat out exposed at the plate. Sorry for bringing this back up from the 2nd page, but I've been out in the real world all weekend! |
Re: Cameron Maybin, Welcome to the Big Leagues!!!
will he learn to catch a fly ball?

will he learn to catch a fly ball? [/ QUOTE ] He's a centerfielder and they made him play left at what many players call the hardest LF in all of baseball, especially during the day. |

Re: Cameron Maybin, Welcome to the Big Leagues!!!
Supposedly Bowden offered Soriano for Maybin straight up last year and Tigers balked. So he has to be a super-top prospect for that to happen in the middle of their 1st pennant race in recent times, no?
Thoughts? |
Re: Cameron Maybin, Welcome to the Big Leagues!!!
Bowden is stupid for thinking he could get Maybin.

In the majors at age 20, QED. 2. But: Soriano would have been a rent-a-player. Chances were almost exactly zero that he'd sign a long term deal in Detroit. Who gives up a supertopprospect for a guy who's going to be with you for a couple months? Not Dombrowski. |
