Best ways to borrow cash?
I'm interested in the best way for me to get some cash to cover living expenses for 2-3 months while I look for a job, probably around $6k. I have only 1 credit card with a limit of $600 and I've never tried getting cash from it. I am currently unemployed but my credit score is decent.

Re: Best ways to borrow cash?
Apply for another card.

Apply for another card. [/ QUOTE ] The interest on credit card debt sucks major ass, and there are usually fees for cash advances as well. If you can find a card with very low to no interest for a year, then this would be an okay method. Borrowing directly from a family member would be best. If you feel weird borrowing from them directly, going to a bank and getting a family memeber with steady income to cosign a loan would be the next best option. |

But if not, going to a bank and getting a family memeber with steady income to cosign a loan would be the best option. [/ QUOTE ] I did this, it was a pretty decent option, I only did $2K though. Take it out for the maximum length they'll offer if you decide to do this, as it will boost your credit score. |

[/ QUOTE ] Having a family member cosign is not an option, since they live thousands of miles away and I might as well just borrow directly from them. I've lived without my parent's financial help for over 10 years so I'd rather not go down that road. Essentially I just apply for all the credit cards I can, then get cash advances? I get about 10 credit card application a month so I suppose that shouldn't be too hard. What kinds of fees/interest am I looking at? |

Re: Best ways to borrow cash?
Of course all of those applications you're getting assume that you are employed; you probably won't get any new cards unless you have excellent credit or lie. If your limit is $600 on the card you have now, your credit (or debt:income) is not at the point where you will get any cards that using a cash advance would be advisable. What is your score? You are probably looking at something like 20+% for cash advances + a 3% (capped at a certain dollar amount, maybe $75) transaction fee.

Re: Best ways to borrow cash?
go get a [censored] job second shift delivering pizzas TODAY. Look for work duing the day.
I hate lazy people. |
Re: Best ways to borrow cash?
these may actually work:
-enroll in a local college and get some student loans. this is esp good if you're 25 or older. also, you'll be able to apply for pell grants and such (which are a lot better than any loan) -look for gov'ment programs that may subsidize your job search -join the army reserve (and probably go straight to bagdad) there are currently big enlistment bonuses... -i know a guy, 10k @3 points/week. |
Re: Best ways to borrow cash?
some more:
-put up your car/land/etc as collateral on a bank loan. if you have a new-ish car worth like 25k, most banks would lend you the 6k you need. -borrow from a friend that has a pile of money. You don't wanna lose a pal, but if he's making 200k/yr, why not ask? -become a bonus whore. there's an EASY 10k waiting for anyone with the balls to go after online poker and gambling bonuses. really. -play better poker. you can support yerself easily playing low limit HE, esp in vegas. |

gis,
at 33 no one should be broke. anyone can get broke but dont stay broke. get a quick job for cash or tips and play small poker and build it up. put in the hours 7 days a week. in no time you should get your 6 g's. or have a decent job by then. you have been around enough to make it gambling if you control spending and tilting. good luck. |
Re: Best ways to borrow cash?
borrow cash from friend, make them drop it off and pick it up from you.

Re: Best ways to borrow cash?

If you can't find a job within one month then you are aiming too high. [/ QUOTE ] nonsense. i'm unemployed, and have been for @4 months. i could've gotten any number of BS jobs in that time, and i'm sure the OP could be pumping gas for $10/hr tomorrow if he really needed to. the more value that a job seeker has, the longer it'll take them to fond the right job, depending, of course, on the industry that they're in, and so on- there's ten zillion $10/hr jobs out there, but maybe only 10,000 $500k/yr jobs. if one has the skills and experience to make that $500k, they had better be ready to spend a year looking for the right fit. they could get a $10/hr job any time. but holding out for what they're worth doesn't mean they're aiming too high. geez! ...though yer right about one thing: there's nothing wrong with slinging pies. it's better than going into debt. |
Re: Best ways to borrow cash?
Seriously? The week after I got laid off last year I had already gone on probably 15 different interviews, in about six different states.
I think I got a total of two unemployment checks from the state of Michigan, and one of those was because we had a family vacation already planned. Literally four hours after I got laid off I had already set up about a dozen interviews, all over Michigan, several in Colorado, two in Washington DC, etc, etc... it's not that hard. The real problem is deciding between the six or seven different offers, figuring out which company will be the best for you in the future... this is the mistake I made (picked the wrong job in CO, so I quit and am taking a different offer six months later). I honestly can't imagine being unemployed for more than a month or so, regardless of your chosen field or education. There's just way too many jobs out there for people who are willing to work hard. If you make a mistake and don't like the job, you can always keep looking while you're working.... sitting on my azz waiting for a job to show up is completely out of the question for me. There's absolutely no way in freaking hell I'd be considering taking out a bunch of creditcard debt at 15-20% interest. |

[/ QUOTE ] Said it before I could. Even if you are interviewing hard core, it's barely a part time job. Working 5 to midnight 6 days a week won't impact your job search and you won't have that debt hanging over your head. I have to ask why you've not put some money in savings? Or at least developed a credit line? At least in this situation you can work your way out of trouble, but what if you have a medical problem, even a fairly minor medical problem? You could be homeless because of an appendicitis. |

You should be doing what everyone else is saying and finding at least a part time night job. If you find yourself without a job and you are highly qualified in a very particular field, sure you can take a couple months to find the right fit, but thats assuming you are in a better financial situation than this person. |

I've been unemployed for almost 2 years and Wells Fargo just sent me an unsolicited pre-approved loan application for $25k. Robusto, suckas!

Re: Best ways to borrow cash?
Sorry perhaps I wasn't clear. By job I meant career job, specifically as an actuary. I have a bachelor's degree and passed 2 exams (if that means anything to anyone) and am studying for the 3rd at the moment. I pretty much have a non-existent work history so while I could apply for those jobs now I'm not sure I'd meet with much success, especially since I graduated and passed those exams 2 years ago.
Yes, clearly going out and getting some kind of scrub job is the best plan. If I were that kind of motivated person I'd be rich by now. You don't come from a middle class, college educated background and fail at life without being lazy/unmotivated. Thanks for the advice though. |

Re: Best ways to borrow cash?
Insurance companies have openings for actuaries all the time, and they're well paid. It's the highest pay salaried gig at the insurance co. I work for except for executives.
You could still get your folks to cosign by obtaining the proper forms and mailing them. They could sign and return them. Credit cards should be your last resort, seriously. Don't even consider it unless you're about to be homeless and there are no other options. Credit card debt is the absolute worst financial position you could put yourself in. |

I would be very surprised if you can find a menial job like that for more than $8. Delivering pizza or bartending is clearly the answer to short term money needs. |
