Horribly misplayed AK! Help me please!
I've played about 30 hands with villain. He seems pretty solid, not doing anything crazy.
I have $50, villain is in the SB and has me covered. Blinds are .5/1 UTG Limps. Folds to me on the button. I have A [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]K [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], and raise to $5 SB calls. BB Folds Limper Folds. Pot is $12. Flop is J [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] T [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] K [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] SB checks, I bet $6, SB calls. Pot is now $24. Turn is 6 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] I bet $24, he raises me all-in. I'm sure I'm beat, but my lousy betting has me pot committed as I have only $15 left. I call, he turns over AQ, and I'm toast. I'm thinking on this coordinted flop, after my flop bet did not take down the pot, I should have checked the turn to control the pot size. I don't think I'm winning a big pot here. This would have left the pot at $24. But then what do I do on the river? Call a small to medium bet, and fold to a big bet? Help me please. Any thoughts are appreciated. |

I'd bet more on the flop, check the turn and call a small medium bet on the river. It's tough to lose much less than $50 here though.

I think you should move down man. No offense, but you can't win with such a fundamental misunderstanding of how to bet size postflop.

I would check that flop a big % of the time.

Re: Horribly misplayed AK! Help me please!
I'd be more inclined to bet this flop with 50 bb though (which is the case in this hand).

[/ QUOTE ] I think the original poster's analysis of the hand is evidence enough that he is plenty capable of playing at this level. The small bet, however, is a mistake, and here's why: Someone on a draw or with a mediocre hand will call a small bet, but someone that calls a pot sized bet is telling you that they really have something. So spending a little more money on the flop bet buys you the information that keeps you from losing your whole stack later on. |

With less than 50 bbs behind and TPTK, I can't understand why you aren't happy getting it AI here
Pot the flop (guess you can find a fold if villain shoves) and shove a safe turn. |
Re: Horribly misplayed AK! Help me please!
With 50BBs, I'm getting it in here once I flop TPTK. Pot flop, push turn.

I guess he had to bet more on the flop and checked the turn? Could you enlighten me here? [/ QUOTE ] The main problem is that he only has 50BB to start the hand. With such a short stack, if you raise pre with AK and flop TPTK you almost always have your stack in the middle. It's not that his thinking about pot control and not neccessarily wanting to play a big pot on this board are incorrect - they just don't apply when you are shortstacked like he was. With a full stack I think is approaching the hand correctly. |
