Vegas here I come

The gf and I are likely flying down on Wed, Nov 15 - Sun, Nov 19. My pokering will unfortunately be limited as cards ain't her thing at all, though she is very supportive of my hobby (goldmine).

I have a couple questions for you mugs.

Any tips on hotel rates (poker rates won't be an option for me) other than the typical Hotels.com and other such site searches?

Anybody else happen to be going that week-weekend?

Re: Vegas here I come

http://www.swavacations.com/ and http://www.usairwaysvacations.com/ often times have very good hotel rates if you can bundle your flight as part of a package deal. I don't know if Priceline.com works with hotels in Vegas, but it might be something to check out.

Good luck

Re: Vegas here I come

I forgot to clarify that we had to book our flight through a Clearwire promotion offer so hotel will be separate. Thanks Tex.

Befolder,

You still may want to check out the rates on those sites, even if you don't bundle your flight in with it. You can also bundle a rental car if needed.

Re: Vegas here I come

Ok, I'll do that. I'm currently scouring the web for deals so I'll check them too.

Re: Vegas here I come

It really comes down to how much you want to stay near the strip and where you want to play. The cheapest on the strip are Barbary Coast, Flamingo, Imperial Palace & Circus Circus. Stratosphere is definitely not "near" the strip, and Circus Circus is really at the north end. The best games are at Wynn, Venetian and bellagio, but you can find good 2/4 limit & 1/2NL games at most strip casinos. If you don't want to drive, then you should stay at or near these.

Re: Vegas here I come

As I'm looking, we'll likely be at either the Tropicana for $80 a night or the Excalibur for $89.

The Imperial Palace is also just over $100 and a better location. Not sure what kind of place it is though. Excalibur is getting the early nod, but it is not a short walk to the good games. I may have to hit my old stomping grounds at the Luxor, though I've heard good things about the MGM games on the B&M forums since they opened up their room.

TexInAtl 10-18-2006 03:04 PM

Re: Vegas here I come

I didn't really care for the Excalibur. It's nicer than the rooms downtown, but definately not as nice as the Luxor, MGM, or other major hotels. Last time I stayed at the Excalibur was several years ago though, so it may be better now. I can't speak for the Tropicana or Imperial though.

Re: Vegas here I come

Try the Flamingo's 2/4$ limit games! Nice atmosphere, juice games. I liked it much better than the MGM (although that's more stylish of course).

I stayed at the tropicana my first (and only) time in Vegas. The interior decorating is rather gawdy, but the rooms were just fine. The location was quite good. We got a ridiculously good rate by way of being a freind of a friend of the daughter of a big wig there, so I have no idea what it costs normally, and if it's worth it.

Re: Vegas here I come

I stayed at Excalibur a while back and it's one of the strange, family-themed (why!?) hotels in Vegas. I wouldn't recommend it, but it is cheap.

I've also stayed at Imperial Palace and it was decent and (like you said) in a great location.

I think this is a great website for shopping around for Vegas-y things: Cheapo Vegas!

I just got back from Vegas this past weekend, actually -- and I'll join the other person who recommended the Venetian poker room. It's pretty good, though at one point I did find myself in a pretty tough 1-2NL game, knowing that I could go ANYWHERE and find more loose-passive players. But then I doubled up through someone who couldn't fold AA and all was well.

Re: Vegas here I come

I agree that excalibur is fairly rundown looking, however your only a tram ride or a short walk from every major casino. That is the key. Honestly, there is very little difference between the hotel rooms from one hotel to the next, other then the price. Who cares what hotel your sleepin in, you'll be asleep, its your proximity to things while your awake that matters.

Re: Vegas here I come

Befolder-

I went to Vegas on Oct 4th. I stayed at the MGM so naturally I played there as it was about a 2 minute walk to the poker tables from my room. Their poker room is pretty nice but it seemed to me, just from glancing around, that they may get more players down at the Bellagio and Venetian. It was harder to get a full table of $2/4 past 3 in the morning.

On a side note, if you play at any of the rooms that are part of the MGM/Mirage players club make sure you get a player's club card. Last time I went I got a players club card and they sent me emails and I was able to stay at the MGM for 70 a night.

I echo the statements about it being a good idea to stay down in the Bellagio are of the stip. Although its not super-close, Treasure Island seems to have decent rates.

Re: Vegas here I come

ahhhhhhhhhhh, hooters is a bad choice. i stayed there last time i went to vegas and it was ridiculous. the novelty wears off kind of right when you open the door and realize, "oh yeah, im sure EVERY OTHER DUDE IN THE WORLD ALSO THOUGHT THIS WOULD BE SWEET." but you kind of get through it. don't eat too many hot wings.

i will have the short hair if you ever see me. im also going to dress up for halloween (which we'll probably do saturday night). im not sure what i'll be yet. i'll post in the NC thread to ask your opinions.

The only good thing I could say about Excalibur is you are right across the street from New York New York and the have the steakhouse called Gallaghers, and inside Gallaghers you will find the best ribeye you will ever sink your teeth into.

We have had good luck at the Flamingo too. Might be a bit more, but the location is right on, like the imperial palace, but i've never stayed there. Avoid Circus Circus, unless you like motel 6 accommodations.

Enjoy your trip. I'm jealous.

My best hope for visiting LV anytime soon is that Paradise's "uhhh... what the hell are we going to do when the US types pack up and leave... aren't Canadians sort of the same thing?" free airline ticket promotion gets me there. But it's probably just an old Russian transport plan to Winnipeg in January or some such. Meh. Google it.

GOGO Micros.

Funny you mention it. Flamingo became the leader late yesterday, but the gf and I didn't have time to confirm it together.

This morning, the deal I saw yesterday was gone, but an even better one popped up at Harrah's so I snagged it for just under a $100 a night plus taxes.

That is a prime location. Woohooo!

Question about trip reporting. How the heck do you guys manage to remember hands well enough after a long sesson to be able to recite them on a report?

I have a hard time thinking I'll be able to remember enough details to do an honorable report.

You don't actually take out a notepad do you? I'd hate for my opponents to think that I'm getting book on them in writing.

Give me tips if you want a decent report.

When I am in Vegas, It will be in lieu of a bachelor party for a friend. As best man, I gotta come up with plans. Anyone familiar enough with LV to tell me where I can go or what the Intinerary should be? He wants to see naked chicks.

PS, I am micro guy not a HSNL guy.

Re: Vegas here I come

Befolder,

I don't bother remembering the exact action, as at low limits it's usually call call call call call. I remember my hole cards and the board as accurately as I can. If I can't remember an exact board card, I make one up that serves the rhetorical purpose just as well (because I like to have little suits in my posts).

Also,

To get a decent trip report you should do something balla.

That is all,
Doc

What if totally anti-balla for the laughs. Do things like:

<ul type="square"> Saying how I never play aces because they always get cracked.
I called 4 bets cold preflop HU because my 3-8 was sooted.
I knew I was beaten, which is why I had to call to find out.
Say the hand is dead whenever Black Mariah (Qs) hits the board.
Rub the belly of the seat to my right for luck whenever I'm in a hand.
Stand up and yell "Bingo bitches" everytime I steal the blinds (as loose as these games are, this may never happen).
Splash the pot with every bet, announce sorry quickly, but do the same damn thing my very next bet.
Someone in the MTT forum once mentioned that the way to announce a raise was to put chips into a metal drink holder, shake them furiously, and slam them down on the table ala Pai Gow Poker (or whatever oriental game does this), and scream, "YAHTZEE!!!".

Re: Vegas here I come

How about:

When dealt your first two hole cards of the night, look around confused until the dealer turns to you and says "Your action, sir." Peek at your cards, stare him straight in the face, and loudly announce "HIT ME!"

This reminds me of something that REALLY happened to me: after a couple of orbits (and playing like a fish) a girl/woman to my left asked me: "How many decks are in the game?"

I think even funnier would be to say nothing, but make the double swiping motion with your cards while looking at the dealer.

I do a variation of this a lot if I am trying to loosen up a table. The first time I see an 11 in my hand (74o, 56o, 83o, etc) I ask if I can double down. When the dealers says "no" I muck
